Historia
Kelly Jackson, manager of the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast, is fond of the Doblinsky brothers, Ivan and Rudy, members of the Silver Sentinels, a crew of crime-solving senior citizens in their Northern California seaside hamlet. After she discovers a jewel-encrusted dagger - with what appears to be dried blood on the blade - on their fishing boat, they share their family history with Kelly, and she learns that the knife may be part of a set from their childhood in Russia. Its sudden reappearance is eerie, but the mystery grows much more serious when a body is found on the boat.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a cozy that contained Cossacks! I learned a few things while enjoying another mystery with Kelly Jackson and the Silver Sentinels. The woman who read this book did an excellent job with the accents. Delightful mystery!

Historia
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

I suggest that you also watch the series. It differs from the book. I’ve been an Anthony Horowitz fan for years, and I loved all the Easter eggs he wove into both stories. I will read it again because I’m sure there are more delicious morsels embedded in the text.

Aussie SciFi with Heart
Revisado: 02-09-19
I've been delighted to discover a number of excellent books recently by Australian authors. I was intrigued by the concept of the book: 33 days in your younger body. I imagined what that would be like. Who hasn't wished they could know what they know now, but have the hot bod of our youth? When I thought about it, I didn't think about using that time in the past to try to save a dying world. King gives us a timer and sets in motion a do-or-die scenario with an unlikely heroine. Does this adventure hinge on derring do? No. Instead the crux tilts precariously on relationships, those most unpredictable things in life. Does she have the faith and courage to do what's necessary no matter what? Do they believe her? And that question we ask in every book: What happens? The story starts gently and builds strongly, but with an audio book you can't flip to the end to find out what happens!

Historia
Can Madeline Waters capture a picture of the ghost William Gray believes is haunting him? Others have caught some shadowy figures on film at the Antebellum house, built in the 1800s on a private island in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. A single photo would result in William granting permission for her to use the private journals of his long-dead ancestor and namesake, Captain William Gray, in her thesis research. Madeline's disbelief in the supernatural isn't helpful and she wonders if the wealthy loner is suffering a mental collapse until she experiences the ghost of the Captain herself.

Surprised by the plot twists
Revisado: 08-06-18
I really thought I knew where this book was going. It starts out like The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, but it twists and turns and keeps you interested until the very end. I'm a sucker for a good ghost story from romantic (Ghost and Mrs. Muir) to funny (Topper) to terrifying (Ghost Story), but this one kept me guessing. The only downside was that the narrator's voice was fairly emotionless. I like to be read to...pretty much by anybody...but I've gotten used to some very good voice acting since I joined Audible, and this narrator was not up to par.

The Romantic Dance of Dare Me
Revisado: 04-07-18
The tight framing of this classic valentine romance ties all the pieces of romantic push-pull together and wraps the story up with a big red bow. I loved the sexual tension of past memories and the present as well as the misperceptions and miscommunication that makes the dance of romance so much fun. I like stories that resonate with classic romances. For example, the food scene in Dare Me between Adam and Misty reminds of the sexually charged food scene in Tom Jones. I’d particularly recommend this book to those who enjoy updated holiday romances.

Brian is Matty's Nightmare Slayer
Revisado: 02-17-18
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely! Capturing Karma had the right balance of the two tensions: sexual and dangerous. While there is a lot of humor and familial warmth in this book, they are part of the frame for the story and don't interfere with the rising tension. The characters are multi-faceted. We learn interesting details as the characters react to their surroundings and circumstances. The Sullivan family, comprised of gorgeous men and talented women, is a family you want to spend time with again and again. I read series to spend time with the people in them
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked Matty a great deal. She balances intellect with emotion. She's a vet and shows openness and affection for animals and strong, committed love for humans. Yet she is also wounded and her gift--her "truths"--can't be ignored despite the pain they cause her. She wants justice yet is humane and caring. She's someone you'll want to spend time with. Yeah, yeah, Brian IS gorgeous, but as a woman I want to identify with and care about the heroine.
Have you listened to any of Ted Brooks’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not to my knowledge.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Can a black-and-white, just-the-facts-ma'am police detective find love with a psychic whose visions don't provide who, what, when, where, and why?
Any additional comments?
As with all good mysteries, everything you need to solve it is given to you in this book. For me, part of the joy is getting to the end, looking back, and thinking "Of course!"

The instant Sherry and Carston meet, there’s desire and fascination in the air…but they’re complete opposites. Smart-talking Sherry fought her way up from poverty to stardom as a country music singer. Now, she’s ever in the limelight, ever surrounded by clamoring fans, male admirers, and paparazzi, and her spangled cowboy boots carry her all across the country, from one brightly lit stage to the next. A renowned but reclusive playwright, Carston cherishes his freedom, the silence of his home in the woods, and his solitary country walks.

Mature opposites attract
Revisado: 01-14-18
Would you consider the audio edition of A Swan's Sweet Song to be better than the print version?
I didn't read the print version, but I really enjoy listening to books while driving and exercising so I do consider the audio edition better.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed the author’s playfulness with songs and singing. For example, I like that a singer finds a man who “makes her heart sing.” Oh, and I loved the piglets and the “bacon and eggs.” There’s a bit of a Shakespearean twist as the characters reveal themselves to each other and realization dawns that they’ve been misunderstood. The characters are well realized, and I cared about them and enjoyed the details that brought them to life. There is a stage fright scene that’s very realistic.
What about Jill Culiner’s performance did you like?
It took me a bit to get used to her accent, but she differentiated the characters well and was the perfect voice for Sherry, managing to portray her toughness and her vulnerability.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Charlie, Sherry's manager, made me both cringe and laugh, but he does the right thing in the end.
Any additional comments?
If you like mature heroes and heroines with experience and their feet firmly on the ground, this is the book and the author for you. Sherry and Carston are old enough to have experiences that have scarred them and made them vulnerable, but they have the maturity to overcome the obstacles and to enjoy the differences.

Classic scarred hero
Revisado: 12-09-17
What did you love best about Through Your Eyes?
How relatable Adam and Belle are. I was once temporarily blind when my corneas blistered, so I identified with Belle's fears and uncertainties.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Through Your Eyes?
I loved it when they smacked into each other. Perfect way for a blind woman to meet the love of her life.
Which character – as performed by Ellen B. Gralick – was your favorite?
Belle but Dee's a close second
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
She can't see him, and he doesn't want to be seen.
Any additional comments?
This is a gem of a story, and well-balanced in every way.
