Historia
In this World Fantasy Award-winning novel of magic and kungfu, four siblings battle rival clans for honor and power in an Asia-inspired fantasy metropolis. Jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. It has been mined, traded, stolen, and killed for - and for centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their magical abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion. Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon's bustling capital city.

Great concept. Well done!
Revisado: 04-20-25
A clever concept. Well executed. Clear, strong characters. Will definitely continue to book 2. Typically not into Asian-centric fiction, but this was so engaging I got lost in the adventure.

Historia
Pete is a simple man who enjoys a good drink amongst good friends. Not too much to ask, right? Now, he's trapped in a fantasy world far from home, stuck underground and inside the body of a smelly dwarf with fantastic facial hair. The worst part? The swill that the dwarves are falling all over themselves to drink. It's flat, it's watery, and it has the alcohol content of a rancid coconut. Can Pete save the dwarves from their own sour fate, or will he be forever doomed to plink his pickaxe away in hopes that he hits the motherlode?

Very strong... not a dwarf joke
Revisado: 04-03-25
Great narrator. I'll have to listen to more of his work. Here's the thing about this book. I should give it a 4.5, for reasons I'll share, but we're only allowed whole-value ratings, and this book doesn't deserve a 4-star. So it's getting a 5 with a caveat. For those of you looking for a cozy fantasy LitRPG, this one falls right behind my fave: Player Manager. Maybe you don't enjoy sports so you're going to skip Player Manager without giving it a fair chance. It's your life. So jump into this one. Other more famous LitRPG will get mentioned as "the" cozy fantasy LitRPG to listen to at the cost of this gem, and that's a shame. A VERY strong and light and funny tale. YES, you must hang on past the point the MC gets past his Dwarven work in the mines. Once this story gets beyond that point, it comes alive with personality, to the point I'm rating it at 4.5. Yes, the goat comes off as waaaaaaay to close to a particular cat we love, but I overlooked it because its personality was perfect for the story. The characters are loveable. The story is quaint. And I also happen to have a "Tim" in my life who's annoying, so the message imhit home. Buying book 2 now.

Historia
Max Best was on a roll. After climbing the ranks at Chester FC with his burning desire, innate talent, and the "curse" of a sentient heads-up display with knowledge of all things footie, he was named the club's electrifying new director of football. Seizing the opportunity, he saved the day and led the team out of relegation. But that's when someone tried to murder him . . .

Going strong!!
Revisado: 03-13-25
Most LitRPG series lose momentum in the first book. Almost all do by the third book. Five books in to this series & Ted is still going strong. Such a fun series with characters you just want to root for. You do not need to be a sorts fan to enjoy this well-crafted series.

Historia
The ninth floor. Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal ... It all makes for great fun and even greater television. After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they’re playing war. Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

Historia
In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

An important listen
Revisado: 01-23-25
You don't have to agree with everything you hear in this to understand WHY it was done and why it has to be said. Nothing will change, not because of this well-told story, but because people aren't willing to change. A tragic, raw story to capture something that should have never happened.

Historia
Football is a game of steps: Quick steps. Trick steps. Even sneaky, slick steps. Whether you're on or off the pitch, you best know your footing. And for Max Best, that's no problem at all. He has the ability to read players to a T—thanks to the sentient stat-tracking display he received after saving an elderly man in the streets. Now, as director of football for Chester FC, everything's falling into place for Max. His team is climbing the ranks. He's executing great transfers and hired a literal old hand for his brand-new women's team. What could go wrong?

Best LitRPG next to DCC
Revisado: 01-18-25
This series is so much fun. Besides DCC, this is the only progression series I can't get enough of. The writer knows his stuff and this is another if his books that is full of clever humor. Highly recommend.

Historia
When football fanatic and loveable loser Max Best saved an old codger from a mugging, he never expected to be rewarded with the ability to immediately pinpoint a player's specific skills—and use that knowledge to up his own levels. Ever since that fateful night, Max has devoted himself to the game far more than any mere fan, becoming not only a serious footballer in his own right but a leader both on and off the pitch.

Revisado: 01-12-25
Unlike most of the LitRPG I've read (except Dungeon Crawler Carl) this series gets better and better with each iteration. Football (soccer) fan or not, if you're looking for a WELL WRITTEN litrpg (for a change), you can't go wrong with this series. a great cast of characters, an engaging premise, involved storyline, I found myself constantly rooting for Mr. Best!

Historia
Not too long ago, Max Best was stuck in a dead-end job, trudging from one day to the next and mourning the fact that his burning love of soccer was getting buried in a landslide of cold statistics and intangible tactics. Then, after saving an old man from a mugging, he was "cursed" with the ability to instantly ascertain a soccer player's attributes on sight and use that knowledge to upgrade his own skills. Now he's making a name for himself as an amateur team manager, but it's not enough for him to ditch his dud of a job.

Historia
Max Best is not living his—ahem—best life. His job's a drag, his home's a shooting gallery, his hopes are nil, and lately, even his beloved game of football has devolved from a chaotic, ecstatic delight into a cold, calculating equation complete with stats, tech terms, and mindless lingo. But then Max rescues a mysterious old man from a mugging. "Nick" seems friendly enough . . . until he innocently asks his savior, "Would you sell your soul to be a top football manager?" Naturally, Max says yes, and in that instant, everything changes.

one of the best LitRPGs out there
Revisado: 12-10-24
I don't Iike reading much LitRPG. The writing is... uh, it lacks. A lot. Even the guys making 6/7 figures a year. In this genre, earings doesn't equal writing chops. Fact.
I'm not interested in spending time on something that reads like English Comp 101 (which is 98% of the genre).
I grew up reading Stephen King and Clive Barker. I need authors who know their craft. Know how to tell a story. Don't drag shit out because they're desperate for sales or have no clue how to finish something they started. The world has enough of that lame crap with Marvel movies and the Fast and Furious garbage.
For LitRPG, I've basically only found Matt Dinniman (a god among authors), Damien Hanson of "Buymort" fame (check it out, but warning, the narrator grows annoying after book 1), and now I've found a solid #2 behind Matt's "Dungeon Crawler Carl."
"Player Manager" by Ted Steel. This guy can write!
Yes, it's a sports-based LitRPG. But not all of us are dorks who hate "sportsball." Some of us were athletes and still enjoy the competition of sports.
This guy is funny. Clever. Has a great narrator. And it's football. Real football. Not Murican throwball.
I've devoured book 1 and bought the other three available books based on this listen.
Even if you're not a football (soccer) fan, check it out. Read the reviews if you don't believe me. Plenty of non-soccer fans enjoyed it, not just us "socialist anarchists," or whatever you Murican throwball haters are using to insult soccer fans now.
So glad to have found this series. I actually have something in the world to make me laugh while I wait on Matt's next audiobook to drop.
