Good Story Ruined by Poor Narration

JR Gray turns out very good stories. "Speak no Evil", which apparently is the only other title from this author available on audio, is actually great (both story and narration). Unfortunately I am forced to stick with Kindle for "Clouded Hell" because the narration is stilted and robotic to the point of utter distraction. This narrator has a good voice - its just that there is no inflection, it literally sounds like a robot is reading the book to you. There is no distinction in the voices of the male characters, so when they are engaged in a dialog it is impossible to tell which character is speaking. Similarly, there is no difference in tone or delivery between dialog scenes and internal thoughts or descriptive scenes - in short, the listener is completely lost. This story deserves a prompt do-over with a different narrator.

I was fully hooked from the first chapter and I eagerly await sequels. Charlaine has a way of capturing the look and feel of places and people that is unique.
The narrator did an excellent job!

So many reviews are bashing the narrator. He's not Simon Vance. That's his only fault, apparently. No, he's not delivering a French accent for Lestat. Accept that and move on to acknowledge that his performance is just fine. It's not stellar, or award-winning. They can't all be Jim Dale, now can they?
As for the book itself... Anne is Anne. Her flowery prose gets a little more flowery with each book. The existential arguments get deeper and more opaque.
Bottom line, if you like her writing, you'll like this book too.

Pam Godwin is a god(ess) among authors. I wish Audible and Oh My Audiobooks would offer all of her books - each one is amazing in its own way. The sheer depth of emotion she is able to convey in her characters makes her virtually without equal. Her ability to describe the nuance of each character's experiences is spellbinding - from agony to ecstasy. And yes, she most certainly excels with the 'ecstasy' parts (wink, wink).

I have enjoyed Ms Huss's books for quite a while now and consider myself lucky to have stumbled upon her when I was looking for a new author to obsess over.
I knew I would buy this new series the moment she first announced that it was coming.
But I got a surprise.
I LOVE her new co-author. This guy rocks. I haven't laughed out loud so many times since I listened to Eddie Izzard's book. The internal dialog he writes for Tyler is so much fun. Don't mistake this for a comedy, of course; these characters are as compelling, complex, and damaged as any other in Ms. Huss' universe.
Here's a good example:

"There’s a moment where I consider grabbing the gun that’s still in my glove box and really giving the old boy a Halloween scare, but that feels too easy. Plus, and I have to be honest about this, I want Scarlett to think I’m cool. I mean I AM super f* cool. Everybody says so. But I want her to THINK I am."

(*f-bombs removed for the sake of this review. The are a lot of f-bombs in this series. Which is A-OK by me. I swear like a sailor. Everybody says so.)
As for the narration; its spot-on, as usual. Mr. McClain (AKA Tad Branson, pretty sure that isn't much of a secret) narrates every bit as well as he writes, and Ava Erickson is always superb.

The KGI series started off good but could't maintain its momentum. The series began going downhill at book 6. By book 8 it was unreadable. I'm not referring to the plot or the narrator (both of which are lacking); I'm referring to the writing. The author devolved into endless repetition of inane inner dialogs. l'll have to leave it there and go off in search of some other new author to fall in love with.

I've been searching for a new PNR series. Unfortunately this isn't it. The plot and dialog are just too silly for words.

I wish I had read the reviews here before purchasing this one. My confidence in J R Ward's writing is justified, however the narration speed on this audio is devastating. I had to resort to a library hard-copy to enjoy Rapture.

Moves the story arc along in a big way

Archangel’s Legion moves the overall story arc along in a big way. While the focus is back on Raphael and Elena, many other favorite characters are on screen as well. I do agree, however, with the reviewers who have noted that some aspects of the storytelling and especially certain phrases are seriously being recycled at this point. Perhaps it wouldn’t have been quite so noticeable if I hadn’t listened to this series one after another without breaks in between – but I did. Normally, that fact alone would be a blazing sign that I adored this series in a big way… but honestly I was between a rock and a hard place with not much else to read. Oh, I liked the series – no doubts there. I just had a lot of eye rolling going on in the last three books because some of the phrasing is over-used. I admire Ms. Singh for her unique take on the paranormal genre and for her storytelling abilities in general; I just hope that she takes some time to expand her repertoire before a new book is released.

This is a great series

I’ll be honest – the first time I picked up one of the BDB books I was turned off by the character names and didn’t read more than a couple pages.
More than a year later, when I was desperate for a new series to feed my addiction, I decided to heed the good reviews this series consistently receives and bought the first book through Audible. I liked it. The narrator isn’t great; in that there is little differentiation between character voices, which sort of makes one line blend into another and can be confusing. That doesn’t detract from the story though, or perhaps I should say that the story outshines that defect.
I’ve always been attracted to paranormal novels that feature a dark hero – someone who isn’t the goodie-white-hat type but still lets the reader get behind their story arc. (For example, I was never interested in the Buffy television series until season six hit and Spike really came to the forefront in a very, um, noticeable way. I loved Spike with an unholy fire and still have a soft spot in my heart for James Marsters, wherever he is. Yes, Angel was adorably broody, but he was just too *good*) Anyway, where was I… Oh, right. Dark heroes abound in the BDB series. In fact they’re coming out of the woodwork, so to speak. There are so many tortured, angst-ridden characters here that I’ve got fodder to last for weeks and weeks.*happy sigh*
The thing about JR Ward is that while the first novel was good, the second was noticeably better. I’m more than halfway through number four as I write this and it’s the best yet – meaning, this is one author who hasn’t been satisfied to stagnate once she got published. Each brother’s story has been fascinating in its own right without falling into the ‘been there, read that’ rut that mires some other authors once they have a couple books under their belts.
As for Lover Eternal specifically, Rhage and Mary’s story is great. I’m not going in for a summary because you already read that above. My best advice is, take a look at my book list. If you like the same books that I like, you’ll like these too. I have no doubt.
