A relatively flat story line brought to life by a brilliant narrator. The contrast between the ‘new’ and ‘old’ in the Soviet Union was subtly depicted. The characters were non inspiring.

I have enjoyed the superb narration by Gili Messer who once again, has brought to life the protagonists, their traits including language & dialects . The story of Jews in Appalachia is unique. It sheds light on an era bygone.

The relevance and psychological understanding of the characters
Revisado: 02-28-24
This work of fiction nicely touches on the character of Israelis who relocated to the US. It has nicely integrated a story line with some events associated with antisemitism and bullying all very timely. The author’s professional training comes out nicely when describing the protagonists in the story. I must emphasize that the narration by Gili Messer had a huge impact on brining the story line to life. It almost made me feel I have been at Hong the show, amazing work.

Historia
Yaakov Fine’s practical wife and daughters are baffled by his decision to leave his flourishing dress shop for a ten-day trip to his family’s ancestral village in Poland. Struggling to emerge from a midlife depression, Yaakov is drawn to Szydowce, intrigued by the stories he'd heard as a child from his parents and their friends, who would wax nostalgic about their pastoral, verdant hometown in the decades before 1939. The horrific years that followed were relegated to the nightmares that shattered sleep and were not discussed during waking hours.

Fascinating portrayal of the holocaust experience of a second generation person
Revisado: 07-11-23
An engaging and touching portrayal of the holocaust experience through the eyes of a son of holocaust survivors . It shines the light on the trauma that second generation and perhaps third generation of post holocaust survivors are experiencing today. The reliving of his parents experience through set of encounters with today’s Poles is a masterpiece. The author points out a strange albeit beautiful kinship that develops between the protagonist and one of the females Poles he meets. This short lived encounter is Pointing out to the cultural affinities that may have been preserved between jews and gentles despite the holocaust , It also points out that not all Poles were Jew haters, although the uneducated poles carry their anti jewish biases to this very day. The reading experience has been augmented by the artful narration by Gili Messer. Her performance brings to life the author’s skillful sensitive depiction of Jewish life in the diaspora and the general attitude of Polish uneducated people towards strangers and people that are different. Gili’s deep understanding of the transcultural difference including language and intonation of expressions are unique .

Historia
As an orphaned survivor and witness to the horrors of Auschwitz, Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) compelled the world to confront the Holocaust with his searing memoir Night. How did this soft-spoken man from a small Carpathian town become such an influential figure on the world stage? Drawing on Wiesel’s prodigious literary output and interviews with his family, friends, scholars, and critics, Joseph Berger seeks to answer this question.

Remarkably written
Revisado: 07-04-23
I commend the author for bringing together this story of a special person. I was especially impressed by the author’s ability to settle some of the idiosyncrasy in Wiesel’s portrayals. The author’s own experience as a Jewish immigrant, come out through his depiction of Wiesel’s encounters after the war. Wiesel’s struggle with God resonate with me, since my father had similar struggles , after encounters he had in the concentration camps. The author artfully describes how Wiesel settled the conflict with God . Leaving the questions of “why did he allow those atrocities to afflict his chosen people”, unanswered. He justified his following his religious rituals as following a tradition despite his struggles with God. I am particularly impressed with the author’s abilities to gloss over some of Wisel’s inconsistent adherence to principles when he explains how the various political elements took advantage of Wisell’s stature, exploiting his fame to serve their purposes. I guess there is not such thing as a perfect human being.
The writer is the author of “ The Orphans’ Father” an historical novel and a retired physician.

Revisado: 05-06-22
I was impressed by messages hidden in some of the stories. Giving expression to sentiments and thoughts the young generation in Israel may have in regards to Israel’s creation and some of the policies vis Avis the Palestinians . I was moved by Gili Messer’s reading and linguistic acumen. She brought to life the stories so nicely written by this young author.

Revisado: 04-05-22
This narrated version of this obscure chapter in history has been a joy to listen to. The narrator, Gilli Messer has the appropriate cultural and linguistic acumen to make this story come a live. Listening to her has transported me to the scene where the events described have occurred. I could not wait for the next time To Turn my audible on to listen to this fascinating story. I must say being myself versed in Polish and Hebrew that Gilli pronounced the difficult names perfectly.

Historia
Ami Ayalon seeks input and perspective from Palestinians and Israelis whose experiences differ from his own. As head of the Shin Bet security agency, he gained empathy for "the enemy" and learned that when Israel carries out anti-terrorist operations in a political context of hopelessness, the Palestinian public will support violence, because they have nothing to lose. Researching and writing Friendly Fire, he came to understand that his patriotic life had blinded him to the self-defeating nature of policies that have undermined Israel's civil society.

Getting in touch with reality
Revisado: 03-31-21
I have appreciated this book for uncovering a logical path from Zionism to reality. Infusing a stark logic to the need to let our humanity drive our politics rather than fear. Even if here and there there may be embellishments, I don’t find them distracting. I sense a guarded optimism for Israel future given that this utopian Prime minister Ami described, will be elected and supported to bring us back to our”promised land”. I am haunted though by the saying ( paraphrase) “ , who that controls the narrative of the present will control the future “,
