Historia
An amazing breakthrough in genetic engineering made by Vergil Ulam is considered too dangerous for further research, but rather than destroy his work, he injects himself with his creation and walks out of his lab, unaware of just how his actions will change the world.

Audio quality is abysmal, volume keeps going up and down. Only the story kept me going. Somewhere in the second half the audio engineer started doing his job and from there on it was alright.

Great Storytelling!
- De Jared M. Leitzel en 10-22-23
Much less interesting than the rest of his stuff
Revisado: 04-24-24
I've listened to most of McWhorter's books and lectures. I'm always a bit disappointed when he "repeats" topicd between books, so this one seemed like it would be right up my alley. On the one hand, it was what I asked for: all new stuff! On the other hand, it just wasn't that interesting...

Historia
For most of its 5,000-year existence, China has been the largest, most populous, wealthiest, and mightiest nation on Earth. And for us as Westerners, it is essential to understand where China has been in order to anticipate its future. These 36 eye-opening lectures deliver a comprehensive political and historical overview of one of the most fascinating and complex countries in world history. You'll learn about the powerful dynasties that ruled China for centuries; the philosophical and religious foundations-particularly Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism-that have influenced every iteration of Chinese thought, and the larger-than-life personalities, from both inside and outside its borders, of those who have shaped China's history. As you listen to these lectures, you'll see how China's politics, economics, and art reflect the forces of its past. From the "Mandate of Heaven," a theory of social contract in place by 1500 B.C.E., 3,000 years before Western philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, to the development of agriculture and writing independent of outside influence to the technologically-advanced Han Dynasty during the time of the Roman Empire, this course takes you on a journey across ground that has been largely unexplored in the history courses most of us in the West have taken. In guiding you through the five millennia of China's history, Professor Hammond tells a fascinating story with an immense scope, a welcome reminder that China is no stranger to that stage and, indeed, has more often than not been the most extraordinary player on it.

"Only powerful people have liberty." Sun Yat-sen
- De Kristi R. en 07-25-15
It's hard to fit so much in so little time, but it works.
Revisado: 02-29-24
Quite comprehensive overview of a very long history. Some topics (ie dynasties) feel a bit glossed over, but its hard to fit so much in the limited available lecture time. I did however get quite upset that he did not mention how the Taiping Rebellion was the bloodiest conflict in human history up to that time, to be surpassed only by the World Wars. Quite a detail to skip! That then made me wonder what else was not said, which retroactively soured my enjoyment of the lectures.

Definitely something different
Revisado: 06-25-23
Imaginative, thought provoking, if a little repetitive.
Some ideas were new, others I have seen before.
A great, interesting read, even after I realized all the stories used the same cookie-cutter mold.

The millions of people around the world who loved What If? still have questions, and those questions are getting stranger. Thank goodness xkcd creator Randall Munroe is here to help. Planning to ride a fire pole from the Moon back to Earth? The hardest part is sticking the landing. Hoping to cool the atmosphere by opening everyone’s freezer door at the same time? Maybe it’s time for a brief introduction to thermodynamics. Want to know what would happen if you rode a helicopter blade, made a lava lamp out of lava, or jumped on an erupting geyser? Okay, if you insist.

Randall Munroe does it again!
The science and humor is great. Both funny and informative.
Meanwhile, the narrator delivers as if it was his first read-through, reacting, laughing and getting excited about what he is reading. Very distracting, to say the least.
