The gang's search leads them into the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves. i want the next one in the series!
Revisado: 02-26-24
Richard creates his characters from a place of such kindness, compassion and insight into the human condition. it's been a pleasure to spend time with this beautiful group that he has given us. i can't remember the last time i cried - let alone from such a deep place - when reading a book.
this mystery was as fun as the others, although for me they are merely vessels for his wonderful characters.
Thank you, Richard.

Absolutely brilliant
Revisado: 10-12-22
i found this book completely engrossing from yhe first chapter, and found it difficult to stop listening. really compelling narrative structure, and interesting and likeable characters who made intelligent, believable life choices [given the overall conceit of the story, which just needs to be accepted].
great narration.
Thoroughly recommend!

UNBEARABLE Narration
Revisado: 05-11-21
I started this book prepared to love it. My mother had recommended it as her favorite of Atkinson's novels, having read the physical book.
Unfortunately I just couldn't bear to listen to this narrator. Who on earth thought it was a good idea to use an American putting on a fake British accent? Her character voices were just so far beyond the pale it beggars belief. Such a tragedy, as, despite restarting the book at least 4 times, I just couldn't pay attention to the storyline because the narration was so distracting.
Maybe the book was good, but I just couldn't suffer the constant mis-pronunciation.
I'd love to give this book another shot if they re-record it with one of the many, many fabulous British-accented performers out there.

Historia
Bestselling mystery writer Lucy Harper's talent for invention has given her fame, fortune, and an army of adoring readers. It has also saddled her with dependents, namely her fawning husband Dan. When Dan suddenly goes missing, his disappearance evokes dark memories that take Lucy back more than thirty years—to the day her brother vanished without a trace. That's when Lucy began conjuring stories. The police investigation revealed few confirmed details, so she created tales to fill in the gaps, to explain what happened that day her brother disappeared—and Lucy was the only witness.

Wonderful story, ok narration
Revisado: 01-03-21
Engaging story that didn't lead you to where you might have expected given the unreliable narrator. I enjoyed the book a lot, but I found the narrator had a rather flat affect. Maybe someone thought it was appropriate for the character, but I found it annoying. Still a great listen, and not a very taxing story to follow along.

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

the best novel i have ever read (maybe ever will)
Revisado: 09-10-20
it is tragic, but just so beautifully written. i have listened to this twice, a few years apart, and my wonder at yanagihara's incredible facility to create and convey characters' inner lives was just as powerful the second time.
Of the 500+ audiobooks i have 'read' in the last decade, this and Bill Browder's "Red Notice" are those that have towered above the others, many of whom are giants in their own right. i recommend this book to anyone i think will appreciate the poignant characters and masterful storytelling.

Historia
Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for fame. The one thing he doesn’t have is talent - but he’s not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don’t need to be his own. Working as a waiter in a West Berlin hotel in 1988, Maurice engineers the perfect opportunity: a chance encounter with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann. He quickly ingratiates himself with the powerful - but desperately lonely - older man, teasing out of Erich a terrible, long-held secret about his activities during the war.

in the top 3 of the last 100 books i read
Revisado: 09-29-19
i write one review a year when a book delights and moves me in an exceptional way. not a review as much as a sincere recommendation. This is such a clever and well-written book. Wonderful, rich characters, with a plot and structure that keeps it really fresh and interesting. beautiful exploration of ambition and self-delusion and the human psyche... like a really satisfying puzzle. i rarely cant put a book down, but i didnt want to set this one down. and then i was sad i had finished it.

Revisado: 09-26-19
i don't understand why this book has such a high rating. this was my first Nora Roberts book, so perhaps this pleases her fans, but i found the story dull, schmaltzy and prosaic. a boring, linear recounting of a story that wasnt very compelling.

if you're on the fence, go for it!
Revisado: 12-15-18
I was a little hesitant since, to me, the premise could so easily be handled clumsily, or preachily, or tritely, or any number of other off-putting ways. But I figured the raters before me couldn't be so wrong en masse, and I'm so glad that I did. it's a beautiful story.
this book reminded me a little of Hanya Yanagihara's 'A Little Life' (one of my favorite recent reads), in gentler incarnation. I shall add this to my list of sincere (and repeated) recommendations for friends.

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

I hated it
Revisado: 12-11-18
admittedly, this was a rare foray into this genre for me, and maybe this book is a treasure for King fans, but I just found it pointless. when the mystery is solved by paranormal creatures that can shape shift, it feels as lame and disappointing to me as when the big reveal in non-horror stories is a long-lost twin, or that the whole thing was a dream.
so I hated it and couldn't even finish the book. genre fans may well love it.
