Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Historia
Can literature change our real world society? At its foundation, utopian and dystopian fiction asks a few seemingly simple questions aimed at doing just that. Who are we as a society? Who do we want to be? Who are we afraid we might become? When these questions are framed in the speculative versions of Heaven and Hell on earth, you won't find easy answers, but you will find tremendously insightful and often entertaining perspectives.

Good information that's lost in Identity Politics
Revisado: 03-28-25
At first I really enjoyed this lecture series: it was interesting, the infywas detailed and comprehensive, and the lecturer was entertaining. Then a pattern emerged, Dr Before was trying to force race, gender and identity politics into every aspect of the literature she discussed. There is a place for that when discussing literature but it became so blatant that I had to force myself to finish the series. it's disappointing because this is the only Great Courses series that I have not enjoyed. If you are interested in this topic, by all means listen, but have your BS filter ready.

Historia
The Second World Wars examines how combat unfolded in the air, at sea, and on land to show how distinct conflicts among disparate combatants coalesced into one interconnected global war. Drawing on 3,000 years of military history, Victor Davis Hanson argues that despite its novel industrial barbarity, neither the war's origins nor its geography were unusual. Nor was its ultimate outcome surprising. The Axis powers were well prepared to win limited border conflicts, but once they blundered into global war, they had no hope of victory.

A fresh view
Revisado: 11-19-24
Hanson's take on World War II is a welcome fresh look at what is probably the most studied event in history. I've read a lot of books on this topic but Hanson still managed to reveal new facts and perspectives. A very interesting listen that is highly recommended.

Israel. The small strip of arid land is 5,700 miles away but remains a hot-button issue and a thorny topic of debate. But while everyone seems to have a strong opinion about Israel, how many people actually know the facts? Here to fill in the information gap is Israeli American Noa Tishby.

An interesting perspective
Revisado: 09-05-24
Noah Tishby's take on Israel is an interesting perspective. She is a self-identified progressive which makes her defence of Israel all the more singular. She effectively explains the historical context and simplifies a complex situation. Her voice is smooth, and besides an unnecessary and distracting use of expletives and a sometimes too casual approach, is easy to listen to. Her arguments are powerful - although I found it disappointing that she is scathing of the background to BDS while seemingly being totally blind to the evils behind BLM. She talks about herself to provide some context, but probably does it a bit too much. overall, a worthy contribution to the education of the world on a very misunderstood country.

Historia
Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is clearly seen in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle, all of them fully realized and equally memorable.

Interesting, but...
Revisado: 06-17-24
This is a work of literature which has some interesting parts which are unfortunately eclipsed by the overwhelming amount of unnecessary matter. Cut the book by 35% and it would be more readable.

Historia
The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle called man a political animal. But what did he mean by that? What is democracy? How do democracies differ from one another? How do they stack up against their alternatives, like dictatorship? And can democracy survive the many challenges it faces today? To answer these questions, look no further than Democracy and Its Alternatives. Political science, history, and current affairs rolled into one, these 24 lectures investigate democratic government in theory and practice.

Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Historia
For over a decade, philosopher and energy expert Alex Epstein has predicted that any negative impacts of fossil fuel use on our climate will be outweighed by the unique benefits of fossil fuels to human flourishing--including their unrivaled ability to provide low-cost, reliable energy to billions of people around the world, especially the world’s poorest people. And contrary to what we hear from media “experts” about today’s “renewable revolution” and “climate emergency,” reality has proven Epstein right.

An 'empowering' book
Revisado: 09-08-23
I started Fossil Future with some scepticism but finished it as a believer. Epstein articulates his ideas clearly, effectively and convincingly. As a philosopher he knows how to think through issues and that is a real benefit of this book. Highly recommended.

Historia
One of the most significant books ever written by a head of state, the Meditations are a collection of philosophical thoughts by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121 - 180 ce). Covering issues such as duty, forgiveness, brotherhood, strength in adversity and the best way to approach life and death, the Meditations have inspired thinkers, poets and politicians since their first publication more than 500 years ago. Today, the book stands as one of the great guides and companions - a cornerstone of Western thought.

Gems amongst the rubble
Revisado: 08-13-23
There is a lot of useless rubble to pick through to get to the few gems of wisdom. It is interesting to know how his mind worked and what his worldview was although its practical applications are limited.
