Historia
In the summer of 1981, Mark Brown was a teenager working at a 7-11 store when he wasn't rehearsing with his high school band, Phantasy. Come fall, Brown, now called BrownMark, was onstage with Prince at the Los Angeles Coliseum, opening for the Rolling Stones in front of 90,000 people. Raw, wry, real, this book takes us from his musical awakening as a boy in Minneapolis to the cold call from Prince at 19, from touring the world with The Revolution and performing in Purple Rain to inking his own contract with Motown.

The true story
Revisado: 06-29-24
I really like that it came from somebody who really experienced how Prince was, the good & the not so pleasing aspects and was truthful & did not hold back. Through it all still their relationship was as family & love. This audio book made me appreciate Brown Mark’s musician talent & incredible story of overcoming & triumph. It was inspiring.

The prompt seemed simple: Race. Your Story. Six Words. Please Send. The answers, though, have been challenging and complicated. In the twelve years since award-winning journalist Michele Norris first posed that question, over half a million people have submitted their stories to The Race Card Project inbox. The stories are shocking in their depth and candor, spanning the full spectrum of race, ethnicity, identity, and class. Even at just six words, the micro-essays can pack quite a punch, revealing, fear, pain, triumph, and sometimes humor.

So much richness in diverse experiences & voices
Revisado: 02-24-24
This book is an important contribution to creating understanding. The majority of the stories reflect an effort towards peace and understanding. Race and identity in America is a continued journey with some peaceful green grasses and rough terrain in places, but if we are on a journey together of humanity we can experience more of the peaceful green grasses together. Teaching and learning in this manner is a necessity. It brings out areas that I need to work on, and the content will help me to be careful in my choice of words. Thank you Michele for this incredible work. I am from this land, Niimiipuu, the People, a tribal sovereign nation.

Prince’s stories from people that were like his family was very insightful.

Great sharing of insights into Prince. Would’ve been really cool to have each person read their own words, but still really good. Thanks for sharing.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.
