Historia
In the 1960s, Mao launched China’s Cultural Revolution. Cities grew overcrowded. Technocrats demanded progress from above. Anyone opposed was sent to be “re-educated.” China’s revolution was bloody, fast, and a failure, but what if America started a revolution at the same time, based on the same bad ideas, and it’s just been slower, calmer, and more effective?

How they tricked us
Revisado: 11-13-23
Rufo is one of the most important public intellectuals of our time. He is a great communicator and it shows in this book. This explained how it all happened over the course of decades. Rufo has their playbook. They were so tricky how it was all sold and bought, inch by inch by inch. And now here we are. We never imagined it could happen in America, but the Marxist revolution is here now. This is what it looks like, unfolding in real time. In our schools. In our families. In our courtrooms. In our workplace. Good people need to fight hard for the sake of their kids and grandkids. And do whatever it takes to keep your kids out of these captured schools. We can still win it back. They have a utopian fantasy, but The Truth is on our side.

Left wing bias ruins it
Revisado: 06-15-23
I will save you the time: Learn from your mistakes. Have a growth mindset. Embrace the struggle. Don’t be winey thinking you’re not cut out for it. Or worse, thinking you’re perfect just the way you are. Don’t be proud. Be humble. You will improve if you commit to the constant struggle. You’re human.
You’re better off listening to a Jocko podcast than a progressive elitist professor who filters everything through woke ideology.

Good, but leans Left
Revisado: 04-01-23
If you want actionable ideas to incorporate into your financial planning, Sam's writings, including this book, are great. The only caveat is it's pretty clear that he has left leaning materialistic values. For example, his advice on marriage and education I disagree with. Elite education is overrated at best and a complete scam at worst. And marriage should not be viewed as transactional happiness to be abandoned as a "sunk cost" when your relationship isn't perfect. It's too bad these views are so mainstream. Sure explains a lot about the our cultural decline. But even if you don't share his filter, you can still glean a lot of actionable ideas. And for that, thanks Sam.

Beware: written by a mainstream media journalist
Revisado: 11-21-22
An L.A. Times journalist. That pretty much sums up the filter you'll get. Too much navel gazing, peppered with lefty political views from a lifelong mainstream media denizen. I wanted to like it, kept trying, but... Barf. Had to stop half way. I find books on these types of topics are usually more interesting when written by doers not writers.

Historia
Amazon number one best-selling author Paul McGowan shows us how to effectively shave off those pounds and keep them off through a program you can live with. Most diet schemes ask you to change your lifestyle: cut the carbs, cut the fat, cut the alcohol, cut the sweets, and still, we don't lose those pounds. The EAT diet works without disrupting your life. There's nothing to buy, no major changes to your lifestyle, and you can eat and drink what you like.

All you need to know. BYO will power.

I tend to yo-yo. Keeping it off for years is hardest. I've experimented with multiple strategies and kept daily logs of results over the years. My most successful rounds of weight loss are just like this book - when I just focus on net calories per day, weigh myself every morning and track it all in a spreadsheet. Aim for a steady 2 lbs per week. If you love food like me, the worst kinds are restrictive "silver bullet" types (keto/etc are way overrated). Restricting the wonderful variety of foods just makes you want them more, unless you're a soulless robot. This is a perfect, short book to get actionable ideas and to create your own similar system that works for you. There's no silver bullet. You have to work at it. You have to bring your own spirit, strength, character, discipline, will power. That's in a different book - for that I highly recommend The Bible. Timeless. :) Paul also makes excellent audio hi-fi products of which I'm a happy owner.

Hope my college bound kids get a professor like JP
Revisado: 12-05-18
This book and JP's work in 2018 will go down in history. You can scratch the surface and if you're intrigued, he goes deep. And his ability to articulate can only come from a rare, true connection to something divine. It reminds me of Bob Dylan at his peak when he goes electric! This is the ultimate anti self help book.

Historia
A century after it first appeared, Crime and Punishment remains one of the most gripping psychological thrillers. A poverty-stricken young man, seeing his family making sacrifices for him, is faced with an opportunity to solve his financial problems with one simple but horrifying act: the murder of a pawnbroker. She is, he feels, just a parasite on society. But does the end justify the means? Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov makes his decision and then has to live with it.

Timeless, Truly Great
Revisado: 12-05-18
This audio version is perfect. And the story. I mean wow! Human nature never changes. Every generation repeats the same follies. With these old classics, I read the SparkNotes alongside so that helped. And my son read it concurrently in his HS English class so I had the benefit of him passing along his great teacher's insights. These classics do require some studying, not just reading. This is a book that will build character if you really soak it up and think about yourself and your culture.

Historia
America is in crisis, from the university to the workplace. Toxic ideas first spread by higher education have undermined humanistic values, fueled intolerance, and widened divisions in our larger culture. The Diversity Delusion argues that the root of this problem is the belief in America’s endemic racism and sexism, a belief that has engendered a metastasizing diversity bureaucracy in society and academia.

I have two great kids bound for college. My wife and I graduated from University of Washington in 95. Times have changed a bit. I keep wondering why the heck would I send them off to these corrupt institutions to brainwash them with shallow postmodern nonsense where everyone is oppressed in some way and humans are a cancer on the planet. It's a sick filter to teach young people. This is a good book on my journey to coach my children in the right direction. There are still pockets of greatness out there. It's just that your on your own more these days when surrounded by this stuff in Seattle. It's the big dilemma of the information age: YOYO choosing the right filters.
Best concrete takeaway for me: I now have a $160 unlimited subscription to The Great Courses Plus. It's a fantastic value! And I'm sharing it with my 16 year old son.

Dangerously Misguided
Revisado: 12-05-18
I love a great self-improvement book to spark my fire when I'm in a phase of growing my business. This is the complete opposite. I had to stop half way in. It was making me nauseous and bummed for the state of our culture. This is the kind of popular self-esteem nonsense that allows you to indulge in your own self-engineered constructs of the world. This stuff puts pleasure, shallow happiness and your rights above the things in life that give true meaning, such as building character, taking responsibility, and making the right sacrifices.
The author kept coming back to this idea that everything is a social construct and you are the victim of that. Red flag! If you want evidence of how easy it is to fall into the dead end postmodernist trap that has engulfed our culture, look no further.
