Felt it was the author who crashed on this one!
Revisado: 08-20-13
Any additional comments?
If you want to listen to an entertaining story written by Laura Kinsale, that when you finish, you feel you did not waste 13+ hours of your time or your precious audio credit, don't purchase this one! Go for "Flowers from the Storm" or "The Prince of Midnight". Sometimes I thought the female character was mentally challenged to the point of being physically taken advantage of because she was soo naive. Sure she is written as a genius inventor but something just felt wrong about her intimacy with the male character.
While I feel the author crashed on the story, her choice of NIcholas Boulton as narrator have her flying to the stars... 5 stars for "performance" rating that is!

Not Bad but Not the Best...
Revisado: 08-20-13
Any additional comments?
Anyone that follows me can see a theme that I prefer male narrators so first let me say that Nicholas Boulton has to be up there with the BEST so for him, 5 Stars. But, for the story, only 4 Stars. This is based on my overall annoyance of the female characters repeating expression, mental and verbal, "you only want Elizabeth...you are going to take her... you are going to leave me..." (blah blah blah) WE GET IT!!! She is insecure and has some abandonment issues!! This went on for at least 9 of the 12+ hours of the book which became a bit tedious to me. I'm not sorry for the credit spent but while not bad, not the best of the four books.

No wall banger if that's what you're looking for..
Revisado: 07-22-13
Any additional comments?
Glad I listened to Wallbanger first, but then again, maybe that set me up for disappointment with this AC book. In fairness, I thought the story was good enough and believe that it would have came across much better with a different narrator.
Here's my opinion why:
1 - If the premise of the male character is his "hot" British accent, how about at least TRYING to audio a British accent. Not only was this missing, there wasn't even an attempt at a MALE accent. Some of the "steamy" scenes seemed like I was listening to a lesbian couple ("not that there is anything wrong with that") In fact.. all characters were read in the same voice.
2 - The comedic narrative seemed RUSHED and FORCED. Since all the voices were the same, some of the "one liners" blended into the other characters narrative and the quip was lost.
If you are deciding between the two books offered by Alice Clayton at this time, I recommend you use your credit on Wallbanger. This one is best read instead of audio.

Two for Two so far... Let's make it Three for Three. A Cut & Paste to my review of FLOWERS FROM THE STORM. These are stand alone books, not a series. The depth and classic writing in both are unlike others. And then there is Nicholas Boulton..LOVE his complex character voices and accents that can only be described as, well.. hummm, ahhh. Author writing books that should be deemed classics. This is the kind of audio that, even after listening for 15 hours, you look at your device and feel disappointed that you only have 3 hours left. You don't want it to end because you want to listen to an embracing emotional love story, narrated by the brilliant Nicholas Boulton, all wake hours!! And since Caroline is currently on a self-imposed "dating hiatus," and her neighbor is clearly lethally attractive to women, she finds her fantasies keep her awake even longer than the noise. So when the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts Simon Parker, her heard-but-never-seen neighbor.

I am a smut glutton and a romance junkie. Combined with a funny dialog and a very expressive, talented narrator and I find my credit well spent. When reviewers state they laughed out loud with a book, I don't always find I do the same, even though I have a very healthy sense of humor. I REALLY did LOL with this one. Pure entertainment! Spend your credit. In process of downloading Clayton's only other book offered at this time and will anxiously be awaiting more releases.

While I can't say the audio was a total bust, I found my self saying "Oh, come on.." over and over.. Unbelievable how many overlooked and missed opportunities the characters brought upon themselves. Prefer a book that has a little hope in it... not much here.

Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Overall, book was a good listen. Narrators were excellent. I was headed to a 5 star rating until I noticed that I only had 3 minutes left until the book ended and it was no where near a tidy conclusion or time for an epilogue. Before I knew it, BAM.."we hope you have enjoyed this unabridged performance..." Major disappointment especially after 18 hours of build up. 'nough said.

I’ve listened to many, many books which I have wanted to comment on however, I am not a master of words and feel inadequate to write a substantial review. But then I listen to a book like this and I tell myself screw it, just write something, anything, to let viewers know they won’t be wasting a credit by adding this to their library. You’ve already read the publisher's summary so you know what it is about. That is only a scratch on the surface of what you are in for with this book. And besides, it is worth a credit to hear the performance of Edoardo Ballerini who really is one of the best narrators on audible.

Good Series, EXCELLENT narrator, Edoardo Ballerini
Revisado: 08-04-12
Which character ??? as performed by Edoardo Ballerini ??? was your favorite?
ALL OF THEM!!! Edoardo Ballerini is amazing as a narrator. "Performed" is an understatement. There are A LOT of characters in this series and Mr Ballerini has a unique voice for everyone of them. It is worth your credit to see his voice...not hear it but see it because that is what he does with his narration, he creates a vision of the words written. It was because of his narration of "Beautiful Ruins" by Jess Walter, that I searched other books by him and came across this series. Now that I've finished these, I'm on to searching some of his other works as I know my credits won't be wasted. He could make a phone book come to life!
Any additional comments?
Just finished this, the last of the series offered to date and while the stories were VERY enjoyable AND I love to get my credit's worth from a lengthy book, I would not have purchased the 2nd, 3rd or 4th book had they been as long as the 1st (30 hrs!). At times, even the shorter books seemed to drag on. Matthew Corbett ages gradually through the series both physically and mentally and it is a refreshing and somewhat realistic approach to have him fumble along the way...
