I bought this book a while ago when I was fixated with The New Yorker stories, where I think it was promoted. Zambreno writes visually - I could certainly see all she was describing: the state of pregnancy, the link to other writers and those in her close proximity, but because of the very melancholy topics it kept resting upon, time and time again - I found it depressing, hence it taking me 3 years on and off to complete, and I’m a keen lover of literature and reader. As always, (or perhaps at the time when it was written) the victim approach, feeling sorry for oneself, is flagged and applauded. Come back Jane Austen, Ian McEwan and Sandra Cisneros, to name a few, canonical works which, not only tell tales, but leave something laaaasting, as I say in my short story collection ‘OUR FOREIGN BORDERs’, Amazon. I gave ‘Drifts’, nonetheless, 4 stars, because, as an author, I now what it means/takes to complete a book. You can find my books on Amazon. Xx

I was recommended the whole series and read them all, immediately drawn in by Levy’s voice. Being a child of the diaspora, from Cyprus to Uk, although a decade younger than Levy, I connected and understood her exploration of her dual identity as a female in a foreign land. Indeed I’m writing my own story ‘Sea With Salty water’ , out soon. My other two books ‘Hamster Rats & Other Stuff Going On’ (drawn from my days in Britain), and OUR FOREIGN BORDERS’ (drawn from my travels and teaching in 11 countries) also explore identity, friendship, culture, partnerships and patriarchy, which are available on Amazon. I really recommend this read. Nitsa Anastasiades

I love the way this writer takes her time to tell her story: nothing is forced, yet there’s a shaping, forming of life events so visual; it’s all very relatable- the ups and downs of marriage, raising children alone (female) against societal expectations and/whilst writing. I love the way she questions … we become illuminated with her as she confirms this or that or makes new discoveries. Above all, I love her humor and can relate with her sense of displacement, myself being born and raised in London to Greek Cypriot parents, then moving to Cyprus later on … the mind often swooning between both lands, as in: where do I belong? This book is about many things: love, loss, motherhood, exile, relationships, culture and more. I highly recommend it!

Beautifully narrated, this is a gem about a traveller answering questions on life; the things we hold most dear in life upon this earth and the ever after. A must must read: an amalgamation of insight … of joy and pain … the juxtaposition of opposing perspectives; debating, enlightening, inspiring, but above all, bringing calm. I highly recommend it!!

Tremendous. I cried. Not only is this an important and inspirational book for children, but also adults. What an incredibly gifted and human being Marcus is: a credit to his family. Just shows you what you can achieve if you work hard and believe. I think everyone will be moved/changed by reading this book and must read it. Well done, Marcus!!

... was extremely enlightening, not only for its historical facts, but also for the description of its people and environs. It took me back... as a child I was there before the 74 coup, and reflecting on how Apostlos Andreas, for example, Monastery was then, and how it stands now, made me both sad and connected to my homeland. A great read, passionate, descriptive, albeit through a colonial sounding Englishman narrator/ writer’s eyes. What a wonderful amalgamation of history and culture through the invaders and settlers the island of Cyprus is... and has become.
