The world knows Naomi Judd as one of the most successful and best-loved country music stars ever. What the world hasn't known - until now - is that after her 2010 and 2011 North American tour with Wynonna, Naomi fell into a debilitating and terrifying depression that seemingly came out of nowhere. Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

So good! His grandfather would be proud.

It was gripping from the start, I loved it. I love the Alaskan people. It had history, it had heart, it had suspense, it had beauty. I highly recommend this book!

Historia
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

Historia
France's iconic queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous "Let them eat cake", was alternately revered and reviled during her lifetime. For centuries since, she has been the object of debate, speculation, and the fascination so often accorded illustrious figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted child was thrust onto the royal stage and commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in European history.

What a tragic history. This book gave a full account of the facts and misconceptions of a queen victimized by tabloids. It was a great read.

Historia
The historical twentieth century began with the First World War in 1914 and ended seventy-five years later with the collapse of the Soviet Empire in 1989. The short century saw the end of European dominance and the rise of American power and influence throughout the world. The twentieth century was an American century-perhaps the American century.

Dissapointingly General
Revisado: 05-29-15
What would have made A Short History of the Twentieth Century better?
I know it's a short history but brief doesn't have to be synonomous with general. It could have easily given some detail about a few major events.
What was most disappointing about John Lukacs’s story?
It didn't mention anything about the King/Queen of England, the space race, major disasters, scientific/medical/tech advances or heros of the 1 & 2 world wars or details of major battles of the wars. I wish he would spend a little more time on these and less time defining certain words/terms.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Extremely eye-opening!
Revisado: 12-20-13
If you could sum up The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks in three words, what would they be?
Ironic injustice worldwide.
Which scene was your favorite?
When Debras angry brother was taught and shown about his mother at the lab and him tearing up when he saw the colorful picture the doctor gave him.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me cry aloud many times when telling of the abuse of so many members of the family.
Any additional comments?
I really loved it & would highly recommend it. It opened my eyes to the way things used to be in society and are still in some parts of the country.
