Historia
In Cancer and the New Biology of Water, Thomas Cowan argues that this failure was inevitable because the oncogene theory is incorrect or at least incomplete and based on a flawed concept of biology in which DNA controls our cellular function and therefore our health. Instead, Dr. Cowan tells us the somatic mutations seen in cancer cells are the result of a cellular deterioration that has little to do with oncogenes, DNA, or even the nucleus.

Not at all convinced
Revisado: 08-27-24
Went down so many rabbit holes early on that I completely lost the thread of the ideas the book was trying to convey. Convinced someone must have had a better go at explaining it. Returned this book

Didn't have enough to retain my interest. Really slow, with very limited characters and nothing to make me care about them.

Historia
For generations, our remote ancestors have been cast as primitive and childlike - either free and equal, or thuggish and warlike. Civilisation, we are told, could be achieved only by sacrificing those original freedoms or, alternatively, by taming our baser instincts. David Graeber and David Wengrow show how such theories first emerged in the 18th century as a reaction to Indigenous critiques of European society and why they are wrong. In doing so, they overturn our view of human history, including the origins of farming, property, cities, democracy, slavery and civilisation itself.

Historia
When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Interesting set-up, but never really goes anywhere
Revisado: 06-24-23
I found the world created in the story interesting; a bit implausible, but at the same time facinating. Having created this world though the story never really makes good use of it. I didn't take much away from the story other than looking forward to repeating hypnopedic phrases! I'm glad I'm a beta

Historia
Michael Shellenberger has been fighting for a greener planet for decades. He helped save the world’s last unprotected redwoods. He co-created the predecessor to today’s Green New Deal. And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions. But in 2019, as some claimed "billions of people are going to die", contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.

A bit unfocused, brought in lots of irrelevant points

Important topic to be discussed, but the book doesn't really hit the mark. It wanders around the topic without making a strong case. The narration also doesn't help with telling a compelling story, which I think this could have been

Historia
Once you're online, there's nowhere to hide. Is it paranoia – or is someone watching? For years, Reagan Carsen has kept her life offline. No socials. No internet presence. No photos. Safe. Until the day she stumbles on a shocking murder in a Sydney laneway. The victim looks just like her. Coincidence? As more murders shake the city and she's increasingly drawn out from hiding, Reagan is forced to confront her greatest fear. She's been found.

Some interest ideas, lack of evidence, poor naration
Revisado: 05-10-23
Explores some interesting ideas, but takes such a scatter-gun approach that it's difficult to work out what might be real and what is not. Would have done better to stick to a few of the stronger ideas and really develop those with good supporting evidence that is comprehensively explained. Instead, it's a grab-bag of possibilities that it's difficult to know how much credit to give to. Oh, and the naration is terrible! Rehearsal and learning how to pronounce the difficult words is required

The Case Against Education

Historia
Despite being immensely popular - and immensely lucrative - education is grossly overrated. In this explosive book, Bryan Caplan argues that the primary function of education is not to enhance students' skill but to certify their intelligence, work ethic, and conformity - in other words, to signal the qualities of a good employee.

Thought provoking, though I think unlikely to change policy
Revisado: 04-11-23
It's great to get this take on education. It's so true that so many impractical skills are part of a typical education - I remember solving countless quadratic equations as a kid; but strangely I've never needed to do one since, even doing a STEM job! I like the plan to give kids in schools their time back to learn anything they think is interesting and important rather than forcing them through someone else's idea of a well rounded education (beyond actually practically applicable skills, of course). I did have to disagree with the author about eliminating civics from education though. They may not be required for work, but I think they're important as citizens and voters, and understanding the law and how it works can help keep them out of trouble. So; overall a great case, but I think shifting public opinion on this will be difficult

Stalking the Red Bear, for the first time ever, describes the action principally from the perspective of a commanding officer of a nuclear submarine during the Cold War - the one man aboard a sub who makes the critical decisions - taking us closer to the Soviet target than any work on submarine espionage has ever done before. This is the untold story of a covert submarine espionage operation against the Soviet Union during the Cold War as experienced by the commanding officer of an active submarine.

Loved it, but then I'm a submarine fan! If you are too then go ahead and get it. If not, then the many technical details might get too much for you, but if that's ok then it's also a great story
