I love how Backman insists on the reader having blank spots in our understanding of what’s going on because there are blank spots in Elsa’s understanding. The blending of fairy tales and real life is well done. The characters are very three dimensional and colorful. The story is nuanced and moving. Joan Walker’s performance is colorful and easy to follow, as well as delightful.

A very approachable tour of Greek mythology performed by a very engaging actor. Good fun.

This book contains a wealth of knowledge about the effects and treatment of trauma. It also contains compassionate wisdom about how to make a world in which trust is possible and we come together instead of tearing each other apart. The more people who hear this perspective the better for all of us.

Every American should know the history of the violence and injustices perpetrated against African slaves and their descendants in our country. Without this knowledge we cannot succeed in healing the many wounds created by these past injustices, which we must do in order to form a more perfect Union.

I lived a less intense version of this life. My mother was the severely bipolar one, my father (likely slightly autistic) was the enabler. The religious context was Pentecostal, not LDS, and the conflicts were less extreme. But I felt the truth of every internal struggle Dr. Westover so honestly and unflinchingly related, even down to acknowledging the uncertainties she has in her own memories. An extraordinary memoir.
