I decided to read Drawing Blood as part of 2020's Popsugar Challenge and I'm definitely glad I decided to read this book. Poppy Z. Brite has a gritty, sexual style and her horror voice is bold and interesting for those who are fans of the genre. The book gripped me from the very beginning and will definitely be worth another read in the future.

The story begins with a young Trevor who moves to Missing Mile, North Carolina with his family which includes his father who is a struggling comic artist. After a horror-filled night Trevor is never the same and he tries to make sense of the events that shattered his life when he returns as an adult to Missing Mile.

This is a horror book that also has a passionate and gripping love story and there is a lot of sexual moments in this story.

Overall, I went into the book knowing very little (less than what is in this review) and while some elements were not what I expected I'm really glad I read Brite and am more than willing to do so again in the future. The narration was great, the story was hard to put down and the characters were vivid and interesting.

The Ritual is a story I actually saw in movie form before I read it (usually if I know there is a book I will read it first) and I was impressed by the movie. While the movie is very good and in some ways a bit more streamlined than the book, I am still glad I took the time to read the book as the second half in the story was definitely not highlighted in the film and it has a unique spin on familiar tropes.

The Ritual is the story of four friends (Luke, Hutch, Dom and Phil) who decided to go out into nature and have a holiday together in the rugged Swedish territory. Hutch leads the men on a shortcut into thick, dense woods and things devolve into terror from there. The characters are crafted well, the setting is fantastic and the story is fairly simple in the beginning but more ffective because its a situation any of us can relate to. While there are shades of other horror novels (Dreamcatcher comes to mind) The Ritual proves to have some original moments and Nevill is an interesting newer voice in the genre.

I definitely think if you are a horror novel fan then this book will be a good listen for you.

The narrator is great and really keeps you in the story.

Koontz at his best!

While I have found his more recent stories a bit lacking this is a classic with compelling characters, suspense that works with more than one reading and non-stop action. The performance of the audiobook is great as well. If you are going to read Koontz start here and in this era of his writing. This is when he was lean and mean and at his best.

Dean Koontz's newest series isn't a bad series but its not that memorable either. I felt like Jane Hawk was more of a plain Jane and I never really felt very invested in her and her mission throughout the book. The science fiction idea was pretty interesting and there were a few good sequences but overall it just left me wanting more. Koontz has always struggled in my opinion with characterization while excelling in plot and those two characteristics remain true in this book. If you like his recent stuff you will probably like this. I just like to have a bit more insight and personalization of characters than this book give.

Would you listen to Outlander again? Why?

Definitely at some point. I have a very large to read list but this is one I would be willing to read again at some point. I did a combination of audio book and reading which worked well for me. Davina Porter is an outstanding narrator doing a variety of accents, characters and personalities very well. The story is complex, well researched and emotionally involving.

What other book might you compare Outlander to and why?

Hard to say because in general I don't read historical romances. I would say though that her depth of detail and characterization reminds me of Stephen King and has that epic quality some of his books have. But obviously the subject matter is quite different.

Have you listened to any of Davina Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No but I would be more than willing to again. In fact, I might buy something I wouldn't normally buy because she is the narrator.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not an extreme reaction but I definitely enjoyed it.

Any additional comments?

Don't let the fact it is a historical romance put you off. It actually is a lot more than that. It is a love story to be certain but it feels authentic and there are plenty of other elements mixed in as well including war, political intrigue and even some suspense. It rises far above being a genre book.

Would you listen to All the Light We Cannot See again? Why?

I definitely could see myself listening to this again someday. It was a beautiful story and I felt like it really challenged my thinking.

What was one of the most memorable moments of All the Light We Cannot See?

A realization towards the end of the novel that didn't feel forced.

What about Zach Appelman’s performance did you like?

Very moving and captured the characters well.

Who was the most memorable character of All the Light We Cannot See and why?

I would say Werner. It was an interesting portrayal of a basically good person who does very bad things and the power of propaganda.

Any additional comments?

Definitely a book worthy of the praise it is getting. It gets off to a bit of a slow start but if you stick with it it becomes engrossing.

Would you listen to The City of Mirrors again? Why?

Absolutely, it is a story so rich in detail that I think a second listen in a few years would be very enjoyable. I enjoyed the characters and the long arc of the story over many, many years.

What other book might you compare The City of Mirrors to and why?

The Stand in some ways, I Am Legend in others. It gives a respectful nod to many apocalyptic type of novels but also manages to be it's own thing.

Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed finding more out about zero and also enjoyed the ending which I refuse to give away anything about.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't cry really but I did feel a lot of empathy for the characters.

Any additional comments?

Definitely worth the time investment.

NA

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really. Just happy to hear the details about one of my favorite authors and some of my favorite books

Where does The Picture of Dorian Gray rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Right in the middle. Simon Prebble's reading is very well done and when the story is focused on the dark side of Dorian Gray it is interesting. There are also a lot of passages where him and his snobby friends talk about gossip and philosophize and that is boring (though gives insight into the narcissism that is a theme of the story) Still, in the end, the story delivers with a fantastic and slightly chilling ending.

Would you be willing to try another book from Oscar Wilde? Why or why not?

I would try it but I imagine this would be my favorite of his.

Which scene was your favorite?

His confrontation with the painter, the ending

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The cost of vanity is high.

Any additional comments?

It's a great read at least once. Not sure if I will ever read it again but do feel it was worth my time.
