Not my cup of tea...
Revisado: 05-21-19
I should have expected it from the title and cover, but a lot of this book smells like pseudoscience to me. I just moved into a new apartment and hoped for some in-depth guidance on furniture placement and making a comfortable home. I admit that I'm not a spiritual person, so I am probably not the target audience here, but I found the writing to be flowery and meandering and the tips to be impractical and too general. There is some good advice to be gleaned here, but most of it is intuitive: make your home smell nice, add colors that you like, put your furniture wherever feels best, fix stuff when it breaks. And there is a weird chapter about angels.

great!

I put off listening to this because I thought it might be a preachy self-help type of book, but it's actually a very pleasant read full of interesting anecdotes and information that I hadn't heard before. It definitely makes me want to add more color into my life.

Historia
A national best seller upon its publication, Anywhere but Here is a moving, often comic portrait of wise child Ann August and her mother, Adele, a larger-than-life American dreamer. As they travel through the landscape of their often conflicting ambitions, Ann and Adele bring to life a novel that is a brilliant exploration of the perennial urge to keep moving, even at the risk of profound disorientation. Simpson's first novel is ultimately a heart-rending tale of a mother and daughter's invaluable relationship.

Good
Revisado: 02-08-19
The plot is meandering, and it feels like a series of short stories strung together. I like that sort of thing so it worked well for me. It may be slow for some tastes. The narrator did a great job, and the writing is beautiful.

Historia
A brilliant book by Nobel Prize winner Eric R. Kandel, The Age of Insight takes us to Vienna 1900, where leaders in science, medicine, and art began a revolution that changed forever how we think about the human mind - our conscious and unconscious thoughts and emotions - and how mind and brain relate to art.

Worth the listen
Revisado: 01-28-19
A well written and fascinating read that bridges art, psychology, and biology. My only qualm is that the only women mentioned are models, case studies, and fictional characters... and maybe one scientist. Have there really been no women from 1900 to 2012 who made contributions to this conversation through their own art and study?

Historia
It's the last day of 1984, and 85-year-old Lillian Boxfish is about to take a walk. As she traverses a grittier Manhattan, a city anxious after an attack by a still-at-large subway vigilante, she encounters bartenders, bodega clerks, chauffeurs, security guards, bohemians, criminals, children, parents, and parents to be in surprising moments of generosity and grace. While she strolls Lillian recalls a long and eventful life that included a brief reign as the highest paid advertising woman in America - a career cut short by marriage, motherhood, divorce, and a breakdown.

first chapter was great, and I loved the voice of the narrator. After that the story gets pretty repetitive.
