Historia
Doremus Jessup, a newspaper editor, is dismayed to find that many of the people he knows support presidential candidate Berzelius Windrip. The suspiciously fascist Windrip is offering to save the nation from sex, crime, welfare cheats, and a liberal press. But after Windrip wins the election, dissent soon becomes dangerous for Jessup. Windrip forcibly gains control of Congress and the Supreme Court and, with the aid of his personal paramilitary storm troopers, turns the United States into a totalitarian state.

it Might Be Able To Happen Here!
Revisado: 12-20-20
A timely story. A candidate makes promises to voters that aren't delivered on, while leveraging militias to help gain absolute power. A compelling story and I imagine even more relevant at the time it was written in 1935, but then again maybe even more relevant today.

Historia
Hollywood. Saturday night. A broken taillight leads to a routine traffic stop. It shouldn’t have changed the lives of the four men involved, but it did. The Onion Field is the frighteningly true story of a fatal collision of destinies that would lead two young cops and two young robbers to a deserted field on the outskirts of Los Angeles, towards a bizarre execution and its terrible aftermath.

Classic LA Noir Crime Novel
Revisado: 09-15-19
A great novel, recounting a tragic story of wrong place at the wrong time. The book may dive a little too much into the background of the stories characters which many times felt out of place initially until the narrative catches back up to the point of the characters role in the story. One thing this narrative does is shed light on the frustrations of modern police at the point at which a policeman work finds it way into the courts where not just every action of an investigator's is scrutinized but also insight how to a criminals fortunes can change once successfully tried and convicted.

Historia
In his first novel to follow the publication of his enormous success, The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck's vision comes wonderfully to life in this imaginative and unsentimental chronicle of a bus traveling California's back roads, transporting the lost and the lonely, the good and the greedy, the stupid and the scheming, the beautiful and the vicious away from their shattered dreams and, possibly, toward the promise of the future. This edition features an introduction by Gary Scharnhorst.

A Favorite Steinbeck Novel
Revisado: 07-25-19
A book that truly illustrates Steinbeck's ability to take a seemingly non eventful diner in the middle of nowhere and tell the stories of a cast of characters that find their stories converging on the Wayward Bus.

In the rip-roaring, true saga of the Comstock Lode, Dennis Drabelle skillfully brings to life silver-mining in the late-nineteenth-century American West. The immense wealth extracted from the Lode spurred the growth of San Francisco, and Virginia City, the hell-raising town that sprang up above the mines, was the inspiration for the TV series Bonanza.

Also unexpected and curious commentary on the similitatries to gambling and stock speculation.

Historia
In the late 1890s, Edmund Dene Morel, a young British shipping company agent, noticed something strange about the cargoes of his company's ships as they arrived from and departed for the Congo. Incoming ships were crammed with valuable ivory and rubber. Outbound ships carried little more than soldiers and firearms. Correctly concluding that only slave labor could account for these cargoes, Morel almost singlehandedly made this slave-labor regime the premier human rights story in the world.

Shocking Insight to Belgiums role in the Congo
Revisado: 12-29-18
A hard book to read (listen to), and even more difficult to comprehend. This book provides troubling insight to the horrors of colonization in the Congo. Also interesting was the role Henry Morgon Stanley (of "Livingston I presume" fame) in the region.

Historia
New York Times reporter and best-selling author John Branch takes listeners to the magnificent red soil and rocky arroyos of southern Utah, where the Wright family of Smith Mesa have for generations raised cattle and world-champion saddle-bronc riders - some call them the most successful rodeo family in history. Filled with vivid scenes of cattle ranching and the high drama of rodeo, The Last Cowboys follows three generations of Wrights through the seasons as they are battered by drought, the falling price of beef, and rodeo's ever-present risks of serious injury.

More about a Rodeo Dynasty
Revisado: 07-29-18
Engaging read that shares insight on modern day ranching, which brushes the surface of BLM land use. The book really seems to be more about the rodeo dynasty Wright family, but perhaps that's the point-are Rodeo stars the last cowboys? That aside, the narrative provides great insight to what it takes to succeed in the Rodeo business while shedding light on what it takes to be a rancher these days.

Historia
In the aftermath of World War II, Prussia - a centuries-old state pivotal to Europe's development - ceased to exist. In their eagerness to erase all traces of the Third Reich from the earth, the Allies believed that Prussia, the very embodiment of German militarism, had to be abolished. But as Christopher Clark reveals in this pioneering history, Prussia's legacy is far more complex.

Overview of Prussian History
Revisado: 06-05-18
Interesting read if you are interested in pre-World War 2 German history, and of course Prussian history. Overall, a very academic read that jumps from theme to theme in a way that it made it difficult to maintain a timeline in the general explanation of how events in Prussian history unfolded. Fascinating to learn about the role Prussian militarism is believed to have played in Germany's role in both World Wars. While the reader may be led to believe that militaristic heritage stems from a victory against Napolean and a couple of other victories in other conflicts in the late 1800's, the narrative seems to skip explaining how such an under resourced region came to play such a significant role in world history, a role so significant Prussia was dissolved as an entity at the end of World War 2.

Revisado: 03-20-18
An exciting sci-fi thriller about a kid taking on his world in the not so distant or unbelievable future. Remembering running home from school to play the Atari 2600 with my brother as a kid, this book was an entertaining listen made even more enjoyable being read by Wil Wheaton. With so many 80's cultural references, there seems to be something in this story for every gen-x-er.

Historia
It was on the Silk Roads that East and West first encountered each other through trade and conquest, leading to the spread of ideas, cultures, and religions, and it was the appetites for foreign goods that drove economies and the growth of nations. From the first cities in Mesopotamia to the emergence of Greece and Rome to the depredations by the Mongols, the transmission of the Black Death, the struggles of the Great Game, and the fall of Communism - the fate of the West has always been inextricably linked to the East.

The History of Globalization
Revisado: 03-02-18
Another title for this book could have been the history of globalization because in addition to covering the silk road the narrative also provides insight to world events impacting the economies of nations touched by trade along the silk road. A comprehensive history of the impact of trade and commerce along the silk road. Not overly academic in how the story is laid out made this book an entertaining and educational read (or listen in my case).

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the continent of Africa was a hotbed of international trade, colonialism, and political gamesmanship. So when World War I broke out, the European powers were forced to contend with each other not just in the bloody trenches - but in the treacherous jungle. And it was in that unforgiving land that General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck would make history.

A Forgotten Chapter in a Forgotten War
Revisado: 12-27-17
It always amazes me the stories that aren't covered in popular media, and this would be one of them. If interested in the great war, this is a great read (listen). Some amazing firsts, not least of which is the believed first integrated army. The use of zepplins, the tragedy of colonialism in Africa, insight to the boxer rebellion in China all play a part in the story of the African Kaiser.
