Historia
Newly promoted to captain, William Brewer is tasked to serve and defend British interests in the waters off Brazil. But who defines what constitutes Britain’s Interests? Portugal’s former colony is declaring independence, and an independent Brazil might better serve Britain’s economic development. King George, however, chooses to support Portugal’s monarch and his efforts to retain the colony. At the very least, Portugal’s king wants to retrieve the royal treasury that was sent to Brazil for safekeeping during the Napoleonic wars.

Fantastic! My favorite Brewer book so far
Revisado: 04-10-25
One of the many things I appreciate about this series is that the author writes action very well. Many authors, even ones with great ideas, mess up the action sequences with too many moments of "then he fired his gun, then he turned around, then he stabbed another bad guy, then he fired again, then he turned around again"...until we're all starting to wish the battle would hurry up and end. But James Keffer makes every action scene easy to visualize and enjoyable. And this book, Brewer and the Portuguese Gold, has plenty of action. Brewer really shows how much courage he has, and how far he'll go to do his duty. And the audio effects and narration are awesome! This series is one of best as far as being immersed in the book.

Historia
After gaining valuable experience as an aide to Governor Lord Horatio Hornblower, William Brewer is rewarded with a posting as first lieutenant on the frigate HMS Defiant, bound for American waters. Early in their travels, it seems as though Brewer’s greatest challenge will be evading the wrath of a tyrannical captain who has taken an active dislike to him. But when a hurricane sweeps away the captain, the young lieutenant is forced to assume command of the damaged ship, and a crew suffering from low morale.

I'm on the third book, and I'm loving this series! These books focus on a protege of Bush/Hornblower as he begins his career in the Navy. Yes, Bush and Hornblower are characters that we get to visit! The voice acting is great, and there are perfectly-timed sound affects that make you feel as if you're there on the ship. Seagulls, waves, bells, and the creaking of the deck!

I was only bored during one story; all of the others had me entertained every single minute! I liked how they were short too, that way you could hear an entire story during an evening walk/drive. The voice acting was superb. If you enjoy Star Wars, I highly recommend.

Historia
Failed academic Frank Nichols and his wife, Eudora, have arrived in the sleepy Georgia town of Whitbrow, where Frank hopes to write a history of his family's old estate - the Savoyard Plantation - and the horrors that occurred there. At first, the quaint, rural ways of their new neighbors seem to be everything they wanted. But there is an unspoken dread that the townsfolk have lived with for generations. A presence that demands sacrifice.

Slow start is well worth it

At first I wasn't interested in what was happening, but I keep going, and not really paying attention sometimes. Once it got good I started over because I wanted to know more about the characters; who was who. The author is very descriptive, which ends up making certain moments so real feeling. This book ends up being great if your like visualizing realistic-feeling werewolves.

Revisado: 05-01-24
I'm not sure if someone would enjoy this story if they don't know or care about the character Elim Garak, but since he's one of my favorites from DS9, I enjoyed it immensely. You get to hear about his whole life, beginning with childhood. A couple of questions are answered that you may have always had, and you get to see what his life on Cardassia is like since the ending of the show. And, it's all in Garak's voice!

Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

I wanted to like this, but it's not interesting
Revisado: 12-16-22
I loved Ready Player One (the book only); that's how I got here. The book starts off strong, and I enjoyed the first 10 or 15 minutes. The idea/premise is great. I wanted to like this book, but I began to realize more and more that I was just not enjoying it, and it was a chore to finish. It's as if the author had a great idea but didn't know how to write the story. I didn't care about any character, and I didn't care about what was happening. The dialog, action, and situations are all JUST---NOT---INTERESTING.

Historia
It all started with a simple, yet sneakily difficult challenge from global best-selling author Harlan Coben: Pick a bird of prey, then use it as the inspiration for a brand-new story. The response from some of the best writers on the planet: Game on! The result: Eleven stories that are twisty, scary, surprising and bursting with imagination. An egg worth more than its weight in gold. A mysterious operative known only as Owl. An eagle-watcher who sees more than she should. Even a story that somehow places the Maltese Falcon in a nursing home.

Disappointed, Yet Entertained
Revisado: 11-15-22
The challenge was “pick a bird of prey, then use it as the inspiration for a brand-new story”. To me, that means that the story will involve a bird of prey as a character, or at least that each story will have the reader pondering birds of prey as they read/listen. After all, the front cover shows a couple of birds of prey flying around. But that’s not really what this book is. I’ll re-write the challenge so it fits the reality of this book- “mention any bird or use one as a minor character, and write a story that doesn’t need to revolve around that bird.” I guess I can see how metaphors could be “inspired” by birds, but to me they don’t fit with the imagery offered by the cover of the book. That being said, this book is entertaining overall, with the stories and readers ranging from decent to good, except for one that is outright terrible (the third one called Owl). So, while I was disappointed that most of the stories didn’t explore the lives of birds (a couple of them didn’t mention a bird at all), most of the stories, at least, entertained.

Historia
In this audiobook, The Human Odyssey, we explore the evolution of those characteristics that make us human. The first section looks at our family tree and why some branches survived and not others. Swings in climate are emerging as a factor in what traits succeeded and failed; meanwhile, DNA analyses show that Homo sapiens interbred with other human species, which played a key role in our survival.

Great book on evolution
Revisado: 09-22-21
The reviewer that got bored and gave up should go back and listen to the last half of the book. I guess it did have a slow start, but it ended up being one of the best books on evolution out of the dozen or so I've listened to. There are many different authors, so some are going to be more interesting than others. There were so many interesting points about things all around us, such as: (without spoilers) what advantages does having curly hair give people that live in Africa? The answer makes you think about advantages for different types of hair then, for people in other areas of the world. We all started off black, so why did some people develop light-colored skin? How long does it take for skin, hair, and eyes to change color anyway? Why would something like malaria alter our genes, and why did the blood of people in different parts of the world evolve differently in reaction to malaria (this topic is more interesting than it sounds)? When did people start becoming lactose tolerant, and why? All these have good statistics in their answer. Also, if you like the study of chimpanzees and comparing them to us, you'll get plenty of that subject. Just how smart is a chimp compared to human babies? (This one makes you proud to be part of such a smart species). There's even interesting thoughts on the future of our race. I now have a better idea of the challenges we'll face when we live on Mars. Elon Musk is trying to get us there! If you have an archaeological spirit you'll appreciate this book.
