Historia
The 15th century saw the longest and bloodiest series of civil wars in British history. The crown of England changed hands five times as two branches of the Plantagenet dynasty fought to the death for the right to rule. Now, celebrated historian Dan Jones describes how the longest reigning British royal family tore itself apart until it was finally replaced by the Tudors. Some of the greatest heroes and villains in history were thrown together in these turbulent times.

Historia
Henry V reigned over England for only nine years and four months and died at the age of just thirty-five, but he looms over the landscape of the late Middle Ages and beyond. The victor of Agincourt, he is remembered as the acme of kingship, a model to be closely imitated by his successors. William Shakespeare deployed Henry V as a study in youthful folly redirected to sober statesmanship. For one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, “the greatest man who ever ruled England.”

Excellent work! As a history nerd and a Shakespeare enthusiast, I was inexorably drawn to Dan Jones’s volumes on the Plantagenets and the Wars of the Roses. This newest addition was well worth the wait. I greatly enjoyed Dan’s reading the audiobook as well.

Historia
Warren Robinson planned to go to law school after completing his undergraduate degree. He saw a career in law as a chance to leave his small hometown for a new life in the big city. In another time, Robinson might have achieved his goal, but the year was 1967, and the Vietnam War was reaching its bloody height. Knowing he would be drafted if he went ahead with his plans, Robinson asked for his name to be put at the top of his community's selective service list.

Revisado: 04-07-24
I enjoyed listening to this book. The writer does a good job of telling his story quickly and interestingly. The narration is perfectly delivered by the inimitable Mike Bender.
The American experience in Vietnam has long fascinated me. As I child I hardly knew it was happening. As a young adult I became obsessed with understanding what happened and why. Consequently I have read a multitude of books about it. This brief one was refreshing in its simple approach: one earnest man’s story.
Sadly the whole story of America and Vietnam is neither simple nor earnest. I will continue my journey to know more, but I very much appreciate this brief respite from the harsher realities. I am glad the author chose to share his memories and his faith.

Historia
It was the most remarkable political about-face in American history. During the Civil War, General James Longstreet fought tenaciously for the Confederacy. He was alongside Lee at Gettysburg (and counseled him not to order the ill-fated attacks on entrenched Union forces there). He won a major Confederate victory at Chickamauga and was seriously wounded during a later battle.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-25-24
I can not recommend this book. While I do admire Longstreet and I appreciated that his being blamed for the confederate loss at Gettysburg is challenged, too much of the author’s own political biases bleed through. Also, the narrator had the most boring, monotone delivery I have ever endured.

Ulysses Grant rose from obscurity to discover he had a genius for battle, and he propelled the Union to victory in the Civil War. After Abraham Lincoln's assassination and the disastrous brief presidency of Andrew Johnson, America turned to Grant again to unite the country, this time as president. In Brands' sweeping, majestic full biography, Grant emerges as a heroic figure who was fearlessly on the side of right.

Historia
The most important fact about the coronavirus pandemic that turned the world upside down in 2020 is that our response to it has been an epic overreaction driven by a disastrous confluence of public and private interests - all of them purporting to “follow the science”. Since the lockdowns began, millions of Americans have relied on the reporting of Alex Berenson. Exposing the hysteria and manipulation behind the worst failure of public policy since World War I, this clear-eyed journalist has been a critical source of reason and truth.

Historia
When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Historia
On the first Sunday in December 1941, an armada of Japanese warplanes appeared suddenly over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Six months later, in a sea fight north of the tiny atoll of Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sent into the abyss. Pacific Crucible tells the epic tale of these first searing months of the Pacific war, when the U.S. Navy shook off the worst defeat in American military history and seized the strategic initiative.

Fascinating and heroic story
Revisado: 02-23-19
This is an exceptionally well written account of the beginning of America's Pacific war. Great biographical info on the major players on both sides. Battles described with both detail and story. Now I can't wait to get into the second volume.
