Pleasantly Surprised
Revisado: 07-17-12
The story, while fairly easy to foretell, was surprisingly compelling. I went in with the thought that it was going to be a fluff book, especially with the way the characters are presented, but the author developed them well and presented them with interesting challenges. I was actually wishing the book was longer near the end.

Historia
Art critic Jeremy Grove is found dead, his face frozen in a mask of terror. His body temperature is grotesquely high; he is discovered in a room barricaded from the inside; the smell of brimstone is everywhere... and the unmistakable imprint of a claw is burned into the wall. As more bodies are discovered - their only connection the bizarre but identical manner of death - the world begins to wonder if the Devil has, in fact, come to collect his due.

I agree - Finally!
Revisado: 01-20-12
If you could sum up Brimstone in three words, what would they be?
Gripping, suspenseful story
What did you like best about this story?
The character building that Preston and Child do is fantastic. You really feel the depth of them.
Which scene was your favorite?
The chase scene where they are being chased by the assassin towards the monastery. The reader, Scott Brick, did an astounding job on it (and it was well written, which helps).
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The development of the Reverend's character was particularly moving. They crafted him and built him into such a powerful character. You can see some of the same things that actually happened during the Occupy Wall Street protests. But this book was written 7-8 years before the protests.
Any additional comments?
Please produce the rest of the Preston/Child library unabridged. As I have already done, I will snatch them up as soon as they come available. I love this series and Mr. Brick's narration of it.

Historia
In this groundbreaking work, Tim Harford shows us a new and inspiring approach to solving the most pressing problems in our lives. Harford argues that today’s challenges simply cannot be tackled with ready-made solutions and expert opinions; the world has become far too unpredictable and profoundly complex. Instead, we must adapt. Deftly weaving together psychology, evolutionary biology, anthropology, physics, and economics, along with compelling stories of hard-won lessons learned in the field, Harford makes a passionate case for the importance of adaptive trial-and-error....

In the vein of Predictably Irrational
Revisado: 06-27-11
If you liked Dan Ariely's book and the Freakonomics books, which I did, this is right up your alley. The only criticism I have is that the book doesn't flow as well as I would like. The first part about Iraq and Afghanistan just completely through me. I was beginning to feel cheated (I could really care less about the wars). But Harford managed to win me over and make it all relevant.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

ZZZZZZZZZ
Revisado: 06-22-11
I completely disagree with the most recent reviews. The narrator does nothing for the characters. I can't tell one from another. You want to get a narrator that distinguishes characters, listen to Jeff Gurner read Daniel Suarez. Dotrice is just boooooring. I would agree that Martin writes like Tolkein, if you are talking about the Hobbit. It really is slow to get started. Since I used up 2(!) credits on the thing, I am going to bumble my way through it. But it in no way compares to the 1 credit Wheel of Time series.

Hooked me at the end but annoyed me throughout
Revisado: 06-02-11
I have listened to all of the Wheel of time books, so Kate Reading's voice kind of threw me. I was expecting one thing, and she delivered another. Not bad, just different. About halfway through this listen, I was about to give up, but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. It really hooked me by the end. There is one REALLY annoying thing I cannot find a reason for, the bell sound periodically. I don't know if it was for the tape or disc to signal switching, but what ever it was, it is annoying. Hopefully the rest of the series doesn't have this. Because I am definitely going to have to check out the others.

Historia
A burnout at thirty-five, months behind on his book, low on cash, and something of a loser, Eddie Spinola could use a shot in the arm. One day he randomly runs into Vernon, his ex-wife's brother, and his ex-dealer. Now employed by a shadowy pharmaceutical company, Vernon has something that might help: a new designer drug that stimulates brain function. One pill and Eddie is hooked. His book is finished within days; he learns and synthesizes information at a frightening rate; and he can go a long time without sleep or food.

Good with a great Twist
Revisado: 04-14-11
I don't know if it was the narration or the book itself, but there was a sense of superiority that was annoying. Also, there were some points in the book that I was saying, like you do in a movie, seriously? It just had a few too many unbelievable moments where the answer was quite obvious, and yet, the character seemed not to notice the inevitable. Overall, this is a very entertaining book. I am glad I listened before seeing the movie. Be sure and stick with it till the end. It has a great twist.
