Best James Lee Burke novel in the series so far
Revisado: 10-13-22
Making my way through all of these. This is my favorite narrator for the Dave Robicheaux series and just a beautiful story. I was a little shocked by the changes made to the character's life in the beginning, changes I now see the easter eggs for in the last novel. But they really worked. So satisfied.

Historia
In the most extraordinary journey Ann Rule has ever undertaken, America's master of true crime has spent more than two decades researching the story of the Green River Killer, who murdered more than 49 young women. Green River, Running Red is a harrowing account of a modern monster, a killer who walked among us undetected. It is also the story of his quarry -- of who these young women were and who they might have become.

Well written, well read, comprehensive
Revisado: 02-18-22
I've read some reviews bemoaning how much time this book dedicates to the victims, but not only does this serve to give one a full picture of all those involved and the terrorizing grip Ridgeway had on the area for decades, it gives one an idea of what it was like to have a phantom stalking a community who nobody could come close to identifying. The author is crafty and calculated in the way she lets insight begin to creep in, and it's illuminating to have a firsthand account from such an accomplished individual who was herself part of the community. Rule had personal relationships with many of the people involved in the hunt. Will read her other books for sure.

Historia
Laird Barron’s fourth collection gathers a dozen stories set against the backdrops of the Alaskan wilderness, far-future dystopias, and giallo-fueled nightmare vistas. Combining hard-boiled noir, psychological horror, and the occult, Swift to Chase continues three-time Shirley Jackson Award winner Barron’s harrowing inquiry into the darkness of the human heart.

Poor Narration
Revisado: 05-20-20
I just can't get past the monotonous narration of this audiobook. Barron writes excellent fiction, I have listened to his stories in Ellen Datlow's series Best Horror of the Year and wanted to try his full collections out. I think this would be a good read, but these are loosely connected stories and I literally can't keep track of where we are occasionally because the narrator is so one-note emotionally. It's all read dry and deadpan. I'm going to pick up the ebook and perhaps revisit this to update the story review specifically, normally Barron's stories would earn 5 stars from me. But this production makes it hard to feel the shape of everything. I wonder if that was the voice direction, to execute it like it was being read to you as if in a room by a friend? Regardless, they really missed the mark.

Historia
For four aging men in the terror-stricken town of Milburn, New York, an act inadvertently carried out in their youth has come back to haunt them. Now they are about to learn what happens to those who believe they can bury the past - and get away with murder. Peter Straub's classic best seller is a work of "superb horror" ( Washington Post Book World) that, like any good ghost story, stands the test of time - and conjures our darkest fears and nightmares.

Historia
A sexually charged and wickedly funny thriller starring Tony Award-winning actor Billy Crudup, Harry Clarke is the story of a shy Midwestern man leading an outrageous double life as the titular cocky Londoner. Moving to New York City and presenting himself as an Englishman, he charms his way into a wealthy family's life as the seductive and precocious Harry, whose increasingly risky and dangerous behavior threatens to undo more than his persona.

I loved this audiobook based on the one man shows written and performed by David Cale. When I was younger the productions of Eric Bogosian and Danny Hoch really excited me, and I was pleased to find this piece that had been performed in a similar fashion beforehand. Billy Crudup's narration is just outstanding, moving effortlessly between distinct personas... some within a single character. Included but not advertised is another piece, Lillian, very capably performed by the author himself. I loved both stories, they are both very different. They were also directed and edited well, taking the time to draw out some moments and let them percolate, sometimes with background noise or music, in a way you don't normally see in this format. I'm sure that was influenced by the stage productions. In the discussions afterward, the director and the playwright discuss the challenge of producing a thriller with only one performer. I would highly recommend listening through.

Historia
Homicide detective Bryan Clauser is losing his mind. How else to explain the dreams he keeps having - dreams that mirror, with impossible accuracy, the gruesome serial murders taking place all over San Francisco? How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him - not disgust, not horror, but excitement? As Bryan and his longtime partner, Lawrence 'Pookie' Chang, investigate the murders, they learn that things are even stranger than they at first seem.

Hurry up with the sequel, Sigler! I was bummed at first you didn't do the performance yourself, but Gigante's talent is undeniable. I enjoyed every second. I love the changes you made since the earlier draft as well. Well done! More Nocturnals please!
