Any additional comments?
This book sounded like it was written in a different language, and then published in english via un-edited use of Google Translate. There were tense and conjugation errors that graded on me and distracted from the subject matter. There was also very little information here. I think Roger Banks had a couple of pages of material to fit into this 3 hr book, so there was a lot of repeating. A lot of repeating.
Further, the narrator was terrible as well. For the first chapter I couldn't tell if the narrator was an actual person, or one of those programs that read inputted text with arbitrary inflection. This narrator should read stereo instructions and nothing else.
The production value, too was poor. Often the narrator mispronounced something, and just took another try and the editor let us listen to both takes. Anything to add minutes to the bottom line I guess.
Please don't buy this "book".

These people invent, lead (regardless of title), connect others, make things happen, and create order out of chaos. They figure out what to do when there’s no rule book. They delight and challenge their customers and peers. They love their work, pour their best selves into it, and turn each day into a kind of art.

Waste of Time
Revisado: 12-14-16
What would have made Linchpin better?
This book could have been better had the author supported his claims with evidence. The appeal to an expert (himself) is not a valid argument.
For example, when supporting his point that decision making needs to be pushed down the organizational hierarchy he offered as evidence an anecdote about a glitch in Amazon.com's ranking system that left out an entire genre. The advocates of this genre took to online blogs and message boards. It took Amazon 3 days to respond. He said this is "probably" due to the lack of decision making at the lower levels of the hierarchy. "Probably".
Basically he making his point and then telling us an unrelated story that "could" be relevant had he taken the time to do some investigative journalism. The anecdote was aimed at evoking an emotional response, not logical support.
You see how I just made a claim and then supported it with evidence. This is what we as readers are looking for, Mr. Godin.

As best-selling author Charles Wheelan shows us in Naked Statistics, the right data and a few well-chosen statistical tools can help us answer these questions and more.

This narrator was WAY to dramatic. The book, however, was great. I would read this again in a paper copy.

Cant take it any more
Revisado: 02-22-12
Fred Plotkin is probably a very knowledgeable music lover. I say probably because I wasn't physically able to listen to his book for more than 4 chapters. He narrates the book himself and he is AWFUL. It sounds like he has a cold. I wanted to like this book. I made a very concerted effort to stop being a weak listener, and just get over whatever was bothering me, but I just couldn't.
There is an adjustment period at the begining of any audiobook, to get used to the narrator. I assume that Mr. Plotkin would just require of me a longer adjustment period. I don't have the patience to go on. I lived and died with every gulp of saliva and mispronounced "n".
Also, there is no actual music in the recordings. This seems like such an easy principle: If you convert a book about an auditory experience to an audiobook, then you should include the subject matter!
A failure on multiple levels!

Americans of all political stripes are heading into the 2008 election with the sense that something has gone terribly wrong with American politics. But what exactly? The only thing everyone seems to agree on, in fact, is that the American people are entirely blameless. InJust How Stupid Are We?, best-selling historian and renowned myth-buster Rick Shenkman takes aim at our great national piety: the wisdom of the American people.

More importantly, how stupid do you think I am?
Revisado: 12-09-11
Lets begin on a positive note. The narrator is great! buy books that are read by this guy, just not this one.
The author is a Journalism professor in Seattle. I can accept that most journalists are left leaning. The "profession" attracts that type of person by design. It makes sense. However, I would also like to believe that your average Journalist is smarter than the average person. The more I read the more I find that it is not the case.
This book is full of errors of logic. This book is actually an assault on logic. When the author does, perhaps mistakenly, make a cogent point, his premises are entirely false.
If you are looking for a philosophically titillating argument about democratic politics, this is sadly not the book you are looking for. I had such high hopes that it was. But I was, alas, crestfallen.
However, if you are looking for a baseless attack on the Bush administration and a petulant rant about the ignorance of southern "hicks" (eg Republicans), than this is the book for you!

Pillar of Christian Philosophy
Revisado: 11-27-11
I read this book because I am an avid fan of Peter Kreeft, who is a convert philosophy professor at Boston College. Dr. Kreeft teaches this book in a couple of his courses, and suggests that all Christians should read this book on a regular basis. Truth is revealed by God in scripture and holy tradition, but the same truth can also be revealed by reason. This book is a brilliant attempt at the latter. My only critique is that this narrator is apparently running while narrating as evidenced by his audible gasps before every sentence.

Interesting
Revisado: 11-27-11
I have the Herman Cain bumper-sticker on my car. I have supported his run for the presidency long before Rick Perry even made it into the race. However, I must say, the performance on this audio book was awful. I am perfectly fine with the fact that this was probably ghost written. I think we all know about speech writers. Also, I don't expect that a candidate for President has the time to write a novel version of his stump speech.
Herman Cain narrated this book as though he had never read it before, let alone written it. surely he could have taken a few moments before each chapter to skim the reading and plan out his inflection. It was really painful to listen too. That said, the subject matter was great. The background was impressive. I have nothing but respect for this honest and hard working business man. CAIN 2012!

Why has one game, alone among the thousands of games invented and played throughout human history, not only survived but thrived within every culture it has touched? What is it about its 32 figurative pieces, moving about its 64 black and white squares according to very simple rules, that has captivated people for nearly 1,500 years? Why has it driven some of its greatest players into paranoia and madness, and yet is hailed as a remarkably powerful intellectual tool?
