Historia
The old Victorian pier was a thing of beauty until it was allowed to decay. It was where the youth of Oldcliffe-on-Sea would go to hang out. It's also where 21-year-old Sophie Collier disappeared 18 years ago. Francesca Howe, known as Frankie, was Sophie's best friend, and even now she is haunted by the mystery of what happened to her. When Frankie gets a call from Sophie's brother, Daniel, informing her that human remains have been found washed up nearby, she immediately wonders if it could be Sophie.

OMG, where is the editor?
Revisado: 03-15-24
Endless recitation of the same facts, fears, beliefs. The main character was so tedious and self-centered I started to hope she’d die too. The whole premise did not hold water until the very end. I wonder how many readers abandoned this book before the end?

Tedious
Revisado: 01-06-23
The story was silly and tedious and the narration was awful. Everyone had an annoyingly squeaky or gravelly voice. And what makes this series work —Joe Pike, and to a lesser extent, John Stone— seemed like they’d been added in at an editor’s request, but in a ridiculously mundane role. I’ve read this entire series, but I think based on this book, I’m done

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Wrong voice?
Revisado: 01-20-20
I love Tom Hanks but his gently ironic delivery of this story felt somehow off to me. Regarding the story, as long and involved as it was, as satisfying as it ended up, I still feel cheated not to have learned more about who I felt the real main character was: Maeve. I felt that Danny, like Nick Carraway, was an observer narrator rather than an active participant in the story. Very readable, but far from my favorite Patchett book.

Ridiculously improbable
Revisado: 01-05-20
Spoiler alert. I’ve enjoyed Lisa Gardner’s books before but this was frankly idiotic. I’m not even sure what genre it was supposed to be— maybe romantic suspense ? The plot was so far-fetched, the supposed mysterious threats so over the top—especially when the perpetrator of these threats and the motive was revealed. The opening scene of a electric chair execution (in excruciating detail) was obviously researched and she couldn’t bear to leave it out, but it was ultimately pointless and shows up how many other things were NOT researched...like the fact that someone who is giving blood in an early scene (with a nurse fully cognizant of the situation) ultimately is shown to be dying of cancer. I can only suspect that this was a very early effort by Gardiner which for some reason her publishers agreed to publish once she’d established her audience. And regarding the narration: horribly choppy and terse. Don’t bother with this one.

Disjointed, disappointing
Revisado: 10-16-18
I love Picoult, appreciate her controversial topics and that she always presents the human face behind both sides. And this is a topic particularly close to my heart. However, this story jumped around in time far too much for my taste. There are many point of view characters and all have compelling stories (I particularly loved Dr Ward), but all the people plus backstories on them (necessary and engaging), compounded by a timeline of a single day which bounced from the near end of the conflict to nearly every hour before that—in no order— was distracting and annoying. Picoult’s writing, as ever, is flawless but I felt this book had structural problems.

Read this book, but don't listen to it
Revisado: 08-24-18
The story, which bounces between a diary written in code in the 1730's, and the modern day woman who translates it, is interesting if somehow forced in spots. But the accents used in narrating the book -- English aristocracy, English Cockney, Scottish Lowlands, Scottish Highlands, and French were waaaaaaay too much. And the French and Scottish which predominated were read like the cartoon version of both languages -- the French sounded like that spoken by the cartoon skunk Pepe Le Peu. I toughed it out to find out how it ended, and then the author finished with a 15 minute soliloquy detailing all of her research, which I found a bit over the top. I may explore others by the author, but I won't listen to them read!

Read like someone who grew up a fan of Agatha Christie and wanted to write an old English drawing room murder. Almost every character was a caricature and all were tiresome and irritating. After the second murder I wanted them all murdered. Predictable silly plot with unreal police (who take a bus?). Don't waste your time v

Too coincidental
Revisado: 07-30-17
The beginning was a little rocky, written in the point of view of a rich, self absorbed love struck teenager in the 1930s, but as the book moved beyond that I quickly became absorbed in the story. I was thrown our of the story by what I thought were pointless chapters from the point of view of a year old child, and was disappointed in the ending--everything too neatly discovered and all wrapped up in a bow.

Revisado: 03-04-17
I love this series, but this was a disappointment. Vincent Ruiz is great and he was the primary protag, while Joe O'Loughlin sadly put in only a cameo appearance. There were just too many point of view characters in play, and way too much going on. Really hard to figure out what agenda each of the bad guys had and who we were supposed to be cheering for. I really don't think a thriller with world threats and world involvement is needed in this series. Please, let this be a one-off.
