Historia
As a wielder of domestic magic, Finlay Ashowan likes to keep his affairs as neat and orderly as his kitchen. But between his work for the King and Queen of Daxaria and a new (secret) relationship with Lady Annika Jenoure, his life is anything but tidy. For one thing, if Annika and Fin are to continue their romance, they’ll need to sort out the pesky issue of Fin’s being a commoner—before Annika is forced into a political marriage that interferes with her own carefully laid plans. For another, pressure is mounting as the war with Troivack draws ever closer.

Great little story but...
Revisado: 09-22-24
So often men get women so wrong. Mr. Baldree has done well in the drawing of his characters and in the narration. This was an uncomplicated world and an uncomplicated listen. That is not to say it is simple and not well drawn. I could smell the streets and see the characters. It was fun. BUT! I went to get book two and was disappointed to find that it was a prequel. I like to read books in timeline so this annoyed me. If you are like me and like to read along a timeline instead of in published order read the second book first.

Tom Abrahams writes good books
Revisado: 08-27-24
All the books I have read/listened to so far have been fairly formulaic. That doesn't bother me. In fact I enjoy it sometimes because sometimes I like to listen/read whilst doing something or in crowded environments (ie. airports) so I don't want anything too taxing for those times.
The characters are good. The story is good. It's all good. If you like Tom Abrahams other books you will like these.
A lot of men seem to be a bit upset by these books (read the reviews if you want to read men getting bent out of shape by strong female protagonists LOL) but I applaud Mr. Abrahams for writing some female characters that simpering women having conniptions every time something awful happens. I am also seeing a lot of men (and some women too) complaining that too much attention is given to the main protagonists internal monologue. I didn't even recognise that this would be an issue. I understood that he was a haunted man and getting inside his mind was required to understand the story. I guess some people just want to read books about nothing but action. Pity.

The characters and the world is fantastic
Revisado: 08-27-24
The characters in this book are fantastic. It is nice to read/listen to a dystopian novel/s that have female characters that do not A. need a man to save them, and B. don't desperately search for a relationship. It is also nice to read one where male characters are not all rapists and violent predators, except for the main protagonist of course, who is invariably an altruistic individual. That is the usual trope and it does not occur in this book.
The narrator does a good job. He lets the characters speak for themselves which some listeners may find unnerving (see other reviews complaining about monotone narration). I thank him for that.
Finally, it is also nice to read/listen to a zombie apocalypse book/s in which the reason for the apocalypse is realistic! Thankyou Mr.'s Piperbrook and Adair.

I enjoyed this except
Revisado: 07-21-24
The books all ended suddenly, so did the chapters, there was a feeling that they almost ended mid sentence. Particularly the end of the series. I felt as if the author suddenly thought "yeah I am sick of this, so I will wind it up today".

Historia
Nara and her twin sister, Osha, escaped the brutal clutches of the Wastelanders, survived the violence of the Cooler and fought themselves free against all odds. Searching for answers, they've arrived in a land that bears no resemblance to the cold, harsh world of the Citadel. But there are power games at play here, too. In the Shadow City, rumours abound of a Pure healer with the ability to cure the Branded, a long-awaited prophecy that many would kill to see come true.

It doesn't get better
Revisado: 07-21-24
The narrator continues to do a good job with an awful book. Awful, just awful. You know those books when the woman absolutely loathes a man but you just know she really loves him? You know those books where the woman has to choose between two men, one apparently good and the other a rogue? Of course the good guy turns out to be a horrible person but the rogue is really a great guy. Yeah this is one of those books except it is set in a fantasy world that isn't a well rounded world. A pity. But this book is just woeful trash.

Isfalk is divided into two classes – the Branded, who are vulnerable to disease, and the Pure, who are bigger, stronger and immune. Orphaned twins Nara and Osha are sequestered in the citadel, where their unbranded skin entitles them to a life of privilege, as precious breeding stock. Nara itches to escape her confines and return to the wilds of the Fornwood where she and her sister grew up, but when she is forced to run, she discovers there's much more at stake than her own life. The Branded are on the rise, and the girls are caught up in their prophecies.

Historia
The Viking Age - from 750 to 1050 saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture.
