Historia
Once upon a time Orla was: a woman, a painter, a lover. Now she is a mother and a wife, and when her husband Nick suggests that their city apartment has grown too small for their lives, she agrees, in part because she does agree, and in part because she is too tired to think about what she really does want. She agrees again when Nick announces with pride that he has found an antiquated Georgian house on the Dorset cliffs—a good house for children, he says, tons of space and gorgeous grounds. But as the family settles into the mansion—Orla finds herself unsettled.

In a small college town in New York, everything seems idyllic. Lila Ridgefield's life there seems idyllic. Working only as much as she wants to, a big house, a handsome husband. But like the little town, her life isn't perfect. Then her husband goes missing, and everyone in town is worried and appalled. Except, that is, for Lila, who really thought he was dead last time she saw him - while she was setting up his body in his vehicle.
C H A R A C T E R S
Lila is a thorny character but I actually quite liked her. She felt very real, full of flaws and problems. I felt like she seemed like a good representation of someone who has some major issues and doesn't always cope. I also really like the detective, Ginny. She was very refreshing and enjoyable and I wouldn't mind following her on another case.
P L O T
It might not have been completely unpredictable (to me at least), but while I made some accurate guesses, I could never quite tell HOW or WHY or the path that getting there took. It was quite a wild ride that I enjoyed a heck of a lot.
N A R R A T I O N
I've listened to Xe Sands several times now and really love her voice and narration skills. Auto-listen narrator!

A lot of fun! I really enjoyed the romp. It was a crazy ride that I think most thriller lovers would enjoy.

excellent thriller
Revisado: 10-28-20
Characters: One thing I think the book did very well in many ways was the characters. Wow, but were most of them thoroughly unlikeable and also very unreliable through most of the book. Ellison gets you just close enough to find something likeable and then darts away to show you something that makes you wrinkle your nose at them again. Also, I have to say, stunning job in making you keep flipping from person to person to point that finger at who is guilty in all this. I think it was really well planned and done.
Plot: This was a thoroughly, thoroughly twisty and crafty book that kept me wondering until pretty much the end. I'm generally a very good guesser at the villain, and while I wasn't totally surprised, I was definitely surprised at how we got there and the whys of everything. Even the very very ending had me squinting slightly with wondering. I think that this was very tightly plotted and edited, and probably a book I will return to again to reread, if only to try to figure out exactly how Ellison got us there.
Narration: Full cast narration, pretty much, for an A+++. I always love a larger cast narration, and the shifting points of view make this a worthy choice and helps clarify the POV to the listening ear.
Overall: This is not the first J.T. Ellison book I've ever read, and it won't be the last. I'm a fan, for each one so far has been a solid read for me.
Recommend to: Pretty much any fan of twisty thrillers and unreliable narrators. thrillers and unreliable narrators.

I thoroughly loved this book in every way. It was a clever, twisting retelling of Sherlock Holmes and I dearly hope there will be more someday.

Not my cup of tea
Revisado: 09-18-19
Unfortunately this just wasn't my cup of tea. The premise intrigued but for some reason I never got immersed in it. The first half dragged rather a bit, and I never did feel much for the main character. The second half, or possibly the last quarter, picked up nicely, though I really found a lot of the situations implausible and the finale a bit questionable, after her reactions to everything thus far. I'm almost intrigued enough by the end to see what happens next, but we'll see. The writing was pretty solid, but the characterization never quite settled for me. I'm not certain that the portrayal of mental illness was quite right, either, though the reference to those experiments that really did happen almost sold me on it. I give the story itself probably two and a half stars, rounded up to three. The narration was decent, but there was an undercurrent of almost-static that was mildly distracting. However, the narrator's voice was very well suited to the story and the main character.

Historia
It was a typical February night in 1951 when she stepped into one of Nashville’s many dives and into my life. The blonde asked for my story, wanting to know what had me drinking. She had no idea it was the same thing that had me working at nights, hunting down the monsters that stalk the back alleys of my city. Back in ’31, the job was just supposed to be another bank heist - in, then out, then we'd be rich. But along with the money, we found that cursed ruby, and nothing was the same again.

intriguing and made me want more
Revisado: 08-25-18
The narrator immediately had me with his voice and I have to say that the performance was wonderful. the story felt a little clunky in places but overall ensnared my attention and in the end it did leave me looking for the further adventures of the protagonist. definitely going to be on the lookout for the next story, and maybe it will be longer - something this probably could have been. but overall I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to fans of noir and paranormal.
