When I first read this novel, I was much younger and enjoyed the fanatical elements of the entire story. Now listening to it on Audible years later, I find the characters and even the situations read like an account of real-life (if magic were real.) The beginnings of a greater plot, yet a complete account for Zane. The narrator gave much feeling when needed. I was captured once again by Death. D

I appreciate the historical context but with the fantasy who knows to the accuracy. I have a love-hate relationship with the narrator the voices soft emotional and yet at the same time can come through dull. following along with the children was an absolute Joy the moments of combat were just enough for me. and the complexity of the main character and those she interacted, engaging.

An excellent story from one of my favorite authors. If you're looking to read any William D. Arand or Randi Darren everything but Cultivating Chaos is interconnected and it all starts here.

Just wow.

I've read a bit of Lumley's work, even seen one of these short stories before in a Titus Crowe compilation but as good as those were and as good as the other novellas here are nothing was quite so good as The Taint for me. It is however one of those stories that are better read than discussed. If you're on the fence pick this up, you won't be dissapointed.

A bohemian cultivator.

From his thwarted ascension to godhood our hero is plunged into a lower realm of moody mages and grimdark overtones. He brings a thousand years of cultivation knowledge to a new world and uses it to knock it out and rifle through it's pockets.
Such a fun approach to the genre, hands down in my top three wuxia novels. Humorous and playful on every level, if you're on the fence give this one a chance. I really can't imagine anyone regretting it.

I'm not saying it didn't have to grow on me first.
Another excellent book in the ongoing Arand multiverse. I'm having some suspicions on who the Lord of the North is based on those resurrection comments too...
