Historia
Sylvie Pelletier recounts leaving her family’s snowbound mountain cabin to work in a manor house for the Padgetts, owners of the marble-mining company that employs her father and dominates the town. Sharp-eyed Sylvie is awed by the luxury around her; fascinated by her employer, the charming “Countess” Inge, and confused by the erratic affections of Jasper, the bookish heir to the family fortune. Her fairy-tale ideas of romance take a dark turn when she realizes the Padgetts’ lofty philosophical talk is at odds with the unfair labor practices that have enriched them.

Interesting history of mining in Colorado
Revisado: 11-20-24
The narrator did a good job with female voices but some of the male speaking parts bordered on comical. The text of the story was very interesting.

Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

Too profane for me to read
Revisado: 07-20-24
I didn’t get past chapter 9…
A good story can be written without excessive pornography and profanity. This book appears to be thoroughly laced throughout. I’m moving on to some of better quality.

Good for thought!
Revisado: 01-10-24
I loved the story. One must keep in mind that it is fiction and gives details that go beyond Biblical text. However it follows the truth of scripture, adding interesting speculation about what life was like outside the Garden of Eden after Adam and Eve were banished for their disobedience.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Vulgar and profane
Revisado: 09-25-23
While this story may have some redeeming qualities, I can’t finish it! A truly fine writer could tell the story of poverty and abuse without dragging the reader threw a sewage of filth! I’m no prude but this is extreme.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Enjoyed the story but…
Revisado: 01-18-23
This is one of the most unusual and creative books I have read in a long time. The development of characters was excellent as was the narration. I did think that the view of faith in God and believers in him was dogmatic and out of character for someone as methodical and open-minded as Elizabeth Zott.

Historia
Can a young war correspondent find herself and follow her heart? In this work of historical fiction, 20-something Annabella “Annie” March arrives in France in 1944 intending to write about the war. Soon, however, Annie begins to distance herself from her sometimes-mentor, sometimes-rival - the great Martha Gellhorn - and Gellhorn’s larger-than-life husband, the novelist Ernest Hemingway. She turns to photography in the hopes of making her own name and, to her delight, discovers that images come more easily than words.

I could not follow this story. Weak characterizations, weak transitions, emotionless narration. The epilogue may as well been in Greek! Interesting historical facts but weren’t tied to the story.
