Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

Annoyance at first, then interest
Revisado: 01-28-24
I was extremely annoyed with the two daughters for the entire time they were home. The telling of Vera’s story later in the book captured me and, thankfully, the two daughters’ presence was less in evidence. The description of this imagined life in Leningrad before and during WWII was of a brutal life. Nice to see Vera blossom and to be able to better comprehend her attitude towards her daughters.

Years ago, Bernie and Maya were roommates, but time and Maya’s struggles with addiction drove them apart. Now Maya’s brother asks Bernie to find out what happened to his sister. Tracing Maya’s whereabouts, Bernie learns that her old friend had confessed to the murder of her estranged husband, a prominent astronomer.

Narrator detracted from story

The story line was fine, though not her best. But the narration was mediocre to poor.

From a fan of the author - this one didn’t work
Revisado: 12-25-22
I found the story mostly annoying, not helped by the performance. It’s way too long, and, in all those words I never understood the hatred between the two towns. We’ll, there was a lot that didn’t work for, so my over-riding feeling was irritation.

Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

Enjoyable with some annoyances
Revisado: 03-10-22
Overall I found this an enjoyable “read.” This was my first exposure to the author so I don’t know how typical it is of his writing. My annoyance was that the premise of the initial accusation was ridiculous, only held together by virtue of “the forensic evidence.” The detectives seemed to have no ability to recognize that this evidence could as easily (and more likely) arisen from other than nefarious origins.
That being said, I’ll give the author a second chance by going to the first of the series.

I was bored and annoyed by this book during most of the story. It’s never a good sign when everything and everyone is so predictable. my favorite character was the cat though she was not likeable.

Delightful, as ever
Revisado: 07-14-21
Where else can I find stories that lift us up, poke gentle fun, infuse the place and the characters with understanding and compassion without any saccharin effect? These qualities abound in Alexander McCall Smith’s stories, from Africa to Scotland.

The Work is simply four questions that, when applied to a specific problem, enable you to see what is troubling you in an entirely different light. As Katie says, "It's not the problem that causes our suffering; it's our thinking about the problem." Contrary to popular belief, trying to let go of a painful thought never works; instead, once we have done The Work, the thought lets go of us. At that point we can truly love what is, just as it is.

Loving this book
Revisado: 06-07-21
Though already familiar with the Work, I found that Loving What Is provided a much deeper imprinting of the truth. The range of sample inquiries all boiled down to the same message, that reality is what is and it’s perfect. Don’t see it? Do the inquiry.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

A "page" turner with some reservations
Revisado: 11-15-19
I enjoyed this book; the plot kept me engaged and the performance was very good. My biggest problem with it was that I was not sold on the great loss that Margaret suffers. I just didn't believe it and therefore found her rather whiny and self-absorbed.
But overall it was enjoyable and I do recommend it.

Historia
When the elderly father of a top Pakistani cricketer playing in the multi-million-dollar Indian Premier League dies during a post-match dinner, it’s not a simple case of Delhi Belly. His butter chicken has been poisoned. To solve the case, Puri must penetrate the region’s organized crime, following a trail that leads deep into Pakistan - the country in which many members of the P.I.’s family were massacred during the 1947 partition of India. The last piece of the puzzle, however, turns up closer to home when Puri learns of the one person who can identify the killer. Unfortunately it is the one woman in the world with whom he has sworn never to work: his Mummy-ji.

A good story well read
Revisado: 01-17-14
What did you love best about The Case of the Deadly Butter Chicken?
I thoroughly enjoy all of the characters and find the story line very engaging. As always, the narrator, Sam Dastor, makes it all come alive with his wonderful accents. The narration is truly value-added to an entertaining story.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot keeps you guessing, and the manner of its resolution is made more interesting by the involvement of somewhat peripheral characters, and, of course Vish Puri's intrepid mother.
Have you listened to any of Sam Dastor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to all four of the Vish Puri, Most Private Investigator books and I think that this one is as good as the others. I have found that Tarquin Hall's last two books, including this one, delve into some aspects of Indian society that are more serious, such as some history of the partition and the effects on the individuals who lived through it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I could have listened to this book without interruption, although it was easy enough to return back to when I did have to stop listening.
Any additional comments?
As far as I'm concerned, Tarquin Hall and Sam Dastor can team up anytime with a new Vish Puri mystery and I will be there eager to listen to it!
