Historia
For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds. This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.

How this book make the best of 2024 list??!?
Revisado: 12-05-24
The most self-centered narrative by a deeply unhappy woman on a what seems to me to be a nightmare vacation, (one they have annually scheduled for 20 something years). The definition of insanity. Soooo whiney and soooo much over sharing (ick) and to top it off, continual, gratuitous references to a litany of woke issues. I kept waiting for some plot development, or some way to empathize with the incredibly narcissistic protagonist but no. The writing is actually excellent, have to say, and paints many vivid images but to what end? Grim, grim book. Take it off the 2024 list for God's sake.

Historia
On a secluded bluff overlooking the ocean sits a Victorian house, lavender with gingerbread trim, a home that contains a century’s worth of secrets. By the time Jane Flanagan discovers the house as a teenager, it has long been abandoned. The place is an irresistible mystery to Jane. There are still clothes in the closets, marbles rolling across the floors, and dishes in the cupboards, even though no one has set foot there in decades. The house becomes a hideaway for Jane, a place to escape her volatile mother.

Just not good
Revisado: 09-05-24
Avoid! I kept waiting to get into this book. The reader is ok but a little monotone. Such a glum, depressing meandering story peppered with woke references. The characters are not fully developed and inspire little sympathy. I almost stopped and returned the book half way through but decided to give it a chance for redemption. It failed. This is absolutely the last Reese’s book club book I choose.

I just give up on this series…
Revisado: 03-29-24
I can describe myself as a fan of Jenny Colgan. I’ve enjoyed several of her other series enormously, but this one is just terrible. I kept expecting it to improve. But no. The protagonists remain completely hare brained to the point of being unlike-able. Endless miscommunications and stupid, inexplicable choices. All that and a sub-text of class inequality that continually whines throughout. Eeeek! These books are not at all cozy or heartwarming, just frustrating and grim. I am sorry to say I will definitely never buy another one and would recommend staying away from the entire series.

On her sixtieth birthday, a woman commits suicide. When the case lands on Detective Carl Mørck’s desk, he can’t imagine what this has to do with Department Q, Copenhagen’s cold cases division since the cause of death seems to be clear. But his superior, Marcus Jacobsen, is convinced that this is not in fact a suicide, but a murder related to an unsolved case that has been plaguing him since 1988.

If only the next one was ready to go now...
Revisado: 10-01-22
This is a wonderful series. The ninth book does not disappoint, The mystery is engrossing and keeps up pace. The only possible complaint is that the storylines for the denizens of Department Q are featured a bit less in this book. And without giving anything away it ends on a real cliff hanger. Want the next book ASAP!

Really enjoyed this book. The performance is very good but maybe a little heavy handed with the French accent. Overall excellent story. Highly recommended.

Not her best…
Revisado: 01-28-22
Had to force myself to finish this. Good gawd could the protagonist be any more irritating? And in the first person, too. She comes off as a real idiot. Almost made me hope she got herself killed. I have ejoyed many of Ms. French’s novels. But wish I’d skipped this one.

Constable Hobbs answers their emergency call. He's calm and quietly pleased, as he's never had a murder case. Then the contents of a dozen or so garbage bags are discovered behind the bookshop. The letters inside are nasty.

Honestly, pretty terrible
Revisado: 05-19-20
The narration doesn't help. Very flat and very, very hard to tell which character is speaking. But basically, although the setting should be interesting and the mystery gets one's attention, the characters are remarkably unlikable, down right stupid and not credible. Hoped to continue the series but no way!

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Really enjoyed this book. Made me laugh and made me cry. The setting in NYC —mostly in the 40s but moving on beyond is terrific. Memorable characters and vivid dialogue. Blair Brown gives an outstanding performance.

TERRIBLE! HORRIBLE! AWFUL!
Revisado: 04-02-18
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I couldn’t believe how bad this book was. This is where this wonderful series has come to? The plot was plodding and obvious. The mystery less than mysterious. The dialogue was just annoying. But worst of all these characters who many of us have followed for years with pleasure appear idiotic at least and quite hateful at worst. I really came to hate Barbara Havers for being so completely stupid in all the decisions she made in this book. I never want to hear from her again. And Lynley isn’t much better. Jeeeeesh. Wonderful Thomas Lynley acting like such a yob? What is the author thinking. Just terrible.
What didn’t you like about Davina Porter’s performance?
A generally wonderful reader. Not her fault that the dialogue was so moronic. Hopeless.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment.
