After decades of poising on the brink, the United States and China finally go to war when China invades the island of Taiwan. Deploying their most futuristic technologies in this grand strategic competition of the twenty-first century, the stakes could not be higher. Not only the future of the Taiwanese people but the fate of the world lies in the balance. In an era when humans no longer just use machines, but partner with them in all aspects of military operations, this fictional account views this future war through the eyes of the American, Chinese, and Taiwanese caught up in the maelstrom.

Excellent anticipation of technology
Revisado: 02-16-25
The author is extremely creative in his development of this story. I especially liked his description of new technology using a fictional war without getting bogged down in the details of a particular battle within the conflict in Taiwan.

Not as good as Mistborn Trilogy
Revisado: 01-27-25
I was disappointed. Actually, it’s more accurate to say that compared to Mistborn Trilogy, I was disappointed. This book just isn’t as good, which probably is an unfair comparison because I thought Mistborn Trilogy was 5 Star Plus!!! This book lacks the pace and imagination I was expecting from Sanderson. It’s not bad, just not as good as I expected.

Writing the Bible: Origins of the Old Testament

Historia
Who wrote Great Expectations? That’s easy: Charles Dickens. Who’s the author of Beloved? Toni Morrison, of course. Now how about the Old Testament? You’d think for a book as widely known, studied, and distributed as the Bible, the question of authorship would have been sorted out by now. But the question is more complex (and fascinating) than it seems. Why? Because asking it is to challenge everything we might assume about the Bible’s identity as a book, about what “writing” and “authorship” really mean, and about how a written text could become sacred.

What a Great Courses Book Is Meant to Be

Very informative
Revisado: 06-06-24
I had a rudimentary knowledge of the Bible from my childhood. This course exposed me to ideas and information that I had not heard previously. The flow and pace of the course was excellent. I highly recommend it.

Historia
Welcome to the fabled Gold Coast, that stretch on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America. Here two men are destined for an explosive collision: John Sutter, Wall Street lawyer, holding fast to a fading aristocratic legacy; and Frank Bellarosa, the Mafia don who seizes his piece of the staid and unprepared Gold Coast like a latter-day barbarian chief and draws Sutter and his regally beautiful wife, Susan, into his violent world.

Disappointing
Revisado: 05-02-24
I reader all the preceding books in this series and enjoyed them immensely. I gave each a solid 5 rating. As a result I’m saddened to write that I did not enjoy this book. One of the things I enjoyed in the prior books was the protagonist’s discussion of Judaism. Unfortunately, in this book, I found the author to be disrespectful of Jews and Judaism in both the United States and Israel. The Jews
in the United States are portrayed as very shallow and provincial people who have no respect for
Judaism or their fellow Jews. The Jews in Israel are also portrayed as having no respect for Judaism. The author even shows no respect for the Western Wall. He provides no insight into why he wanted to visit Israel or what the country meant to him. Sadly, I’ve lost interest in reading the remaining books in the series.

Historia
The day before Yom Kippur, the synagogue sound system is on the blink, the floral arrangements are in disarray, and a member of Rabbi David Small’s congregation—in the Massachusetts town of Barnard’s Crossing—is terribly concerned with how much a Torah weighs. The rabbi is determined not to let these mundane concerns ruin his day of prayer and contemplation. But the holiest day of the Jewish year is interrupted when a member of the congregation is found dead in his car.

Historia
David Small is the new rabbi in the small Massachusetts town of Barnard’s Crossing. Although he’d rather spend his days engaged in Torah study and theological debate, the daily chores of synagogue life are all-consuming—that is, until the day a nanny’s body is found on the rain-soaked asphalt of the temple’s parking lot.
