Great setup for a grand adventure!
Revisado: 04-03-25
The title says it all. This book reads like the first act of a mysterious and daunting adventure. The narration is well done and breaths life into the world and its people. The characters introduced are diverse, each with a depth and purpose. Given that this book is YA they are flawed, with room for personal improvement. Yet, trials lay ahead which will surely test their character. The story has just begun…

Historia
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-13-24
The prose and narration were surprisingly good; unfortunately, everything else was terrible.
Although the prose was well done overall, there are phrases throughout the book that read more like nonsensical AI gibberish. The editor should have caught the numerous contradictions and inconsistencies that plague every chapter. Pop culture references that were intended for humor often just broke my paper-thin immersion in the story. And the naming scheme… there are roughly 20 characters but the author decided to refer to them by first/last names, nicknames, and titles at random. The editor’s slapped on naming appendix at the beginning of the book was a poor and lazy bandaid which hardly alleviated the confusion. The two MCs were too similar (constant teenage snark and frustration) while all the other characters were unique and diverse, but woefully one-dimensional.
The world building is the worst I’ve ever seen by means of being nonexistent. The plot went from confusing to boring to slightly intriguing before the completely muddled, action-packed mess that was the climax.
Even the book’s sales pitch was a disappointing lie in all regards.
Muir is a good writer, but this is an awful book.

Historia
Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village #49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. But Arthur has an edge: a stolen heart card that secretly fell into his possession, thanks to a dragon. It’s a priceless source of power for the Baron and the tyrant will kill to get it back. Invaluable, too, to a young man of spellcasting ambitions.

Historia
It is the spring of 1895, and more than a decade of combating eldritch entities has cost Dr. John Watson his beloved wife Mary, and has nearly broken the health of Sherlock Holmes. Yet the companions do not hesitate when they are called to the infamous Bedlam lunatic asylum, where they find an inmate speaking in R’lyehian, the language of the Old Ones. Moreover, the man is horribly scarred and has no memory of who he is. The detectives discover that he was once a scientist, a student of Miskatonic University, and one of two survivors of a doomed voyage down the Miskatonic River.

For, of course, many of the Company's old adversaries are still around. The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out. Not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But it’s all we dream about: the hideously slim chance we’ll survive to make it out the gates and improbably find ourselves with a life ahead of us, a life outside the Scholomance halls. And now the impossible dream has come true. I’m out, we’re all out. We saved everyone. So much for my great-grandmother’s prophecy of doom and destruction. Ha, only joking! Actually, it’s gone all wrong.

Bad ending
Revisado: 06-08-24
The first book was by far the best of the trilogy, and they got progressively worse. To summarize, this book was A LOT of internal complaining/raging, some over-explaining and boring events, and a few pointless romantic flings. Oh, and the MC succeeded at everything she attempted, no matter how “impossible” her internal monologue made it seem.
