I'm an infra engineer, not a developer, but I still found the book relevant in almost its entirety.

The parts on coding are equally valid for any kind of automation or orchestration, not just for traditional programming, and a lot of the principles authors present are mental models that can be applied to just about anything.

There was a lot of food for thought. I went through the chapters slowly, analyzing and digesting how the principles relate to my own work.

I felt humbled, educated and inspired.

I now have a new entry in my "most influential books ever" list, and hopefully an improved quality of work :)

Having received an opportunity to transfer a song from my head into an actual recording, I searched for a guide to recording studios for people who have no prior experience with one in order to prepare better and avoid potential pitfalls. This was perfect.

I waited until after my recording session to leave a review, and can honestly say the guide was useful and my first recording experience was better for having listened to this first. There were no surprises. Communication with the sound engineer and the expectations were clear. Time estimates which, at first, sounded like "too much time, can't possibly take that long" ended up being on point for me as a first timer.

Narration style was relatable, and everything I could think of was covered, including mental/physical prep that is not directly related to music. There are sections and lists (in accompanying PDF) that seem to speak directly to neurodivergent minds: an average person might think it's "duh", but for me, having a checklist that includes little things like showering and planning when/what to eat on the day was an essential tool for keeping anxiety in check and not getting overwhelmed.

History of growing moral panic

As a historical overview of how the moral panic surrounding ADHD medications and their usage as a drug came to be, authors crafted an interesting story.

Unfortunately, while ready to question motivation of *others*, they're blind to their own biases and don't shy away from using bombastic "hooks" and blanket statements throughout the series, becoming a sketchy part of the history they are trying to describe "objectively".

Neither of the authors has ADHD, and both come from a private university background, where they witnessed drug misuse, or - in case of one of them - personally participated in it. This experience is the lens through which they see everything else they report on. While they do admit that "ADHD is real", its medical treatment is perceived as dangerous, governed by big pharma conspiracies, and something to be reserved "for those who really need it". It's not made clear who those people are, but they are somewhere out there, with their blatantly severe manifestations, representing no more than 2-3% of general population. Probably children.

A lot of space is given to concerned parents, sketchy journalism, experts from 50 years ago, drug abusers and bad experiences. The single representation of a person who had decidedly positive experience with adult diagnosis and treatment was placed within the chapter on trendy tiktok self-diagnosing, and caricatured. Not a single contemporary ADHD expert was interviewed.

....

Content aside, I'm a big fan of the podcast's editing: sound clips chosen, music score and mixing were done expertly.

Listened to this one (as it was included in the plus catalog) to gauge the author and see if full-length works would be worth it. It's a resounding NO.

While squeezing the life out of all the fantasy tropes could be forgiven in a light read, the author (aligning with the narration point of our Hero) seems to be aiming for DEEP and ENLIGHTENED tone rather than a light read - with sloppy plot devices and sloppy editing (characters routinely forget things they said or did just minutes earlier because those actions or words no longer fit the current plot device), this just comes across as pompous and cringy.

The narrator is okay,

Traditionally taboo topics presented in a popular science style with a touch of author's personality and humor. I *was* grossed out by some of the topics (from the ethical perspective rather than squeamishness), but thankfully the stating-the-facts manner of writing (rather than trying to play on emotions) made these easier to go through.

The narrator is perfect: aside from the voice itself which feels like a warm hug (deep, clean, pleasant), the interpretation really gives life to the stories and occasionally adds its own touch of humor.

In combination, listening to the book feels similar to watching a good documentary.

The narrator has a very nasal voice, puts unnecessary dramatic accents on every sub-sentence (kinda like in YouTube clips with celebrity gossip), and in general, seems to just readreadread to get it over with, with no understanding-backed interpretation whatsoever. To make it even less professional, there are places where he mispronounces a word, makes some kind of clicking sound and then continues with the right pronunciation - seems like the clicking sound was supposed to be a marker to edit the mistakes out which was never done. Horrible.
