Historia
As historian Mark Essig reveals in Lesser Beasts, swine have such a bad reputation for precisely the same reasons they are so valuable as a source of food: they are intelligent, self-sufficient, and omnivorous. What's more, he argues, we ignore our historic partnership with these astonishing animals at our peril.

No more pork for me
Revisado: 04-24-19
Way too much lurid, nearly disgusting detail about the appetite of the pig, Repetition about the Middle Eastern peoples and pork, and their attitudes to the pig. Interesting passages, but lots to wade through to get there. Very interesting bits about "salting" the islands with mating pigs. And the army does march on its stomach....... Not my favorite "focus on" book. Sorry Mark Essig....

Revisado: 08-05-18
New to Baldacci, he didn't disappoint. As a first of a series, this was a grand entry. Loved the characters, the plot, the tension and the resolution. Found a new "favorite author" -- that makes 12 favorites!

Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

Unexpected
Revisado: 10-17-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Hard Magic to be better than the print version?
Audios are the only way to go for me, and I loved the narration with the superb characters identified by their own special vocal peculiarities. Loved the new "world" Larry Correia has spun up for us. Different, but truly fascinating. Thanks, LC
What other book might you compare Hard Magic to and why?
Don't like to compare books, each one is a unique creation.
What does Bronson Pinchot bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
A true feeling for the characters, amazing how he injects emotion and description rolled into a real person.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Fascinated
Any additional comments?
Thanks for the weird world of anything goes..........

Historia
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

Been here before
Revisado: 04-06-14
Would you try another book from Veronica Roth and/or Emma Galvin?
Might possibly - narrator was good, story was well-worn
What could Veronica Roth have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
More original material - there are so many alternate world, teen hero, save the world offerings, but they all seem similar.
Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but she did a pretty good job
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Probably not - be good for the YA's and/or the sci-fi yuppies????
Any additional comments?
Good try, but no cigar

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Yesssss! Absolutely!
Revisado: 04-06-14
Would you listen to The Golem and the Jinni again? Why?
Already replaying it, the story was so rich with detail, and characters so utterly fascinating from an altogether different outlook, I was enthralled... Interesting world they populated. Some New York City history as well, from the immigrant's view.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Golem and the Jinni?
When the Golem was brought to life, the Jinni's desert story, basically all the background character developments were really riveting. And the end was just --- whew!
Which scene was your favorite?
Lots, can't pick a favorite
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Earth meets Fire
Any additional comments?
Loved the book - hope the author keeps writing - her character development was really fun to hear.

Revisado: 04-06-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I didn't get to the story, the southern / german / new york / southern / rotating accent narration was so irritating, I ditched the story. Wasted credit!
What do you think your next listen will be?
Spies of the Balkans
What didn’t you like about Aimee Bruneau’s performance?
Needs to polish up one accent or the other, but can't switch in the middle of a sentence.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No
Any additional comments?
Wish I had my credit back
