Historia
R. Eric Thomas didn’t know he was different until the world told him so. Everywhere he went - whether it was his rich, mostly White, suburban high school, his conservative Black church, or his Ivy League college in a big city - he found himself on the outside looking in. In essays by turns hysterical and heartfelt, Thomas reexamines what it means to be an "other" through the lens of his own life experience.

Here for it all the way
Revisado: 06-06-21
Today I was walking around Target listening to the final essay of Here For It, you know, the wedding. The beauty of those scenes and the vision cast by R. Eric Thomas had me blinking back tears. Thomas is funny and thoughtful and generous and brave. Here For It is worth your time, and listening to it read by the author is a treat!

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

Excellent dramatization of two great women
Revisado: 01-05-20
Marie Curie won not just one but two Nobel prizes, in physics and chemistry. She was, in this telling at least, greatly encouraged by her friendship with a British engineer, a woman who discovered how to make the electric arc lamp, still ubiquitous, quiet enough to be useful.
The story of these two brilliant women and their contributions to quality of life inspires tremendous admiration.

Historia
Charlie Gordon knows that he isn't very bright. At 32, he mops floors in a bakery and earns just enough to get by. Three evenings a week, he studies at a center for mentally challenged adults. But all of this is about to change for Charlie. As part of a daring experiment, doctors are going to perform surgery on Charlie's brain. They hope the operation and special medication will increase his intelligence, just as it has for the laboratory mouse, Algernon.

Thought provoking and compassionate.
Revisado: 01-05-20
As old as this book is, it still feels very current. It is a reflection on technical wizardry and its effects on the people involved. One truth remains: we human beings need to feel that we are connected and our existence matters. With all the burgeoning awareness and increasing use of AI today, this book may be more relevant than when it was published 60 years ago.

So much good advice
Revisado: 07-06-18
There is so much in here for improving one's communication skills. I'll need to reread this a couple of times to take it all in. I'm trying to practice - or at least think of - these skills at work, with my wife, with my kids, and everywhere else.
Fortunately, as one of the authors said at the end, sometimes even knowing there is a thing called a crucial conversation is enough to help is be better communicators.

Thriller to the end.
Revisado: 06-30-18
it was hard to put this book down. Whenever I got to the office or wherever I was going to head to stop listening I lingered in the car for a few more minutes just to hear a bit more. The plot made sense, the threat was credible, the players seemed true to life.
I could wish Quaid's enunciation was clearer, and the overall recorded volume level was higher for better dynamic range in the listening environment, but that's not enough to prevent me heartily recommending this book.

Historia
Col. Sidney Mashbir so embraced the Japanese language and culture, that he achieved a closer intimacy with Emperor Hirohito than any Westerner. In spite of Mashbir and his Japanese allies' courageous, peace-keeping efforts, World War II erupted. Mashbir was then forced to take a pivotal role in defeating Japan, a nation and its people whom he had so befriended.

Little-known American and Japanese History
Revisado: 04-29-16
Colonel Mashbir is not a name that springs to mind when discussing American military and world events in the first half of the 20th century. But it should. He spent a lifetime in service to his country, and in so doing, decades in service to the world in general and specifically to Japan. His friendship with Emperor Hirohito was hugely important in the surrender and rebuilding of Japan after WW2, and General MacArthur relied heavily on Mashbir's knowledge of Japanese culture. I enthusiastically commend this book to your attention.

Fascinating and Enlightening
Revisado: 04-26-16
An excellent systems view of how things work, of the development and transmission of ideas. As a design engineer I found this very relatable. I have many times experienced the "light bulb" moment at the end of the slow hunch, and long been aware of the contributions from diverse fields of knowledge and life experience for solving problems. This book puts it all together, and in so doing suggests ways to structure our daily lives to support and increase good ideas.
