Boring story of boring narrator?
Revisado: 04-30-25
I was bored during a lot of the book. I have a MA in history and teach Latin American History so I liked the real connections being made but I was never fully engaged. Idk if that’s due to a weak narrator or weak story

Historia
A real-life historical figure, the woman known as Malinalli, Malintzin, La Malinche, Doña Marina, and Malinalxochitl was the Nahua interpreter who helped Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés communicate with the native people of Mexico. When indigenous leaders observed her marching into their cities, they believed she was a goddess—blessed with the divine power to interpret the Spaniards’ intentions for their land. Later, historians and pop culture would deem her a traitor—the “Indian” girl who helped sell Mexico’s future to an invader.

#GirlBoss
Revisado: 04-28-25
When I picked this up I thought it was going to have a decolonial or post-colonial lens. I found out pretty quickly it didn’t. I felt it went the colonial #GirlBoss approach. I wanted to like this book so much and I just didn’t

In Manhattan, a young grad student gets off the train and realizes he doesn't remember who he is, where he's from, or even his own name. But he can sense the beating heart of the city, see its history, and feel its power. In the Bronx, a Lenape gallery director discovers strange graffiti scattered throughout the city, so beautiful and powerful it's as if the paint is literally calling to her. In Brooklyn, a politician and mother finds she can hear the songs of her city, pulsing to the beat of her Louboutin heels.

Best narrator ever
Revisado: 02-25-25
I loved it. Best narrator ever and I listen to a lot of books. I have to admit, the beginning threw me for a loop and if I wasn’t reading it for a book club I likely wouldn’t have finished it. I’m so glad I did though because I loved it and can’t wait to read the follow up.

I wanted so bad to like this
Revisado: 02-16-25
There were moments were I thought, “here we go, I’m really going to love this part” and immediately got let down. So many opportunities to discuss communism, colorism, patriarchy , etc and every time the author chose to focus on teen drama instead

It took 3 books but she finally showed growth.
The series is like a popcorn movie. Fun and predictable but I found the protagonist annoying because she wouldn’t grow at all. She finally did

Charismatic narrator
Revisado: 01-22-25
I love the passion of the author. I agree with and recognize my long term agreements with the conclusions the author makes. But I also found frustrations. Not frustrations with conclusions (though I can imagine that accusation coming) but frustrations with the lack of “how’s”. There are a lot of “you need to…” but very little “here is how…”
The author simultaneously says (in sum) that we need to ditch the excuses while also recognizing that teachers not having the resources and schedule to meet the demands are failures of the administration. But, if those are what is preventing me from doing things and I advocate for the changes, what am I supposed to do?
So I recognize the good in the book but I am left frustrated nevertheless.

So many people have theories for why Trump gained so many Latine voters. Many are based in racist tropes. This book does an amazing job going into nuance and detail to help understand the shift

My favorite YA Dystopian book
Revisado: 10-14-24
This is like combing the Giver and Divergent book one and getting something better. Additionally I think even though no individual book in this series is better than Hunger Games one or two, the series overall is superior.
Side Note: I hate the ending of Divergent and Hunger Games but I love this series. And while HGs focuses more on the rebellion and Katnis’s development and trauma, the Testing focuses more on questions of morality and authority
