Historia
The death of legendary jazz trumpeter Joss Moody exposes an extraordinary secret. Unbeknown to all but his wife Millie, Joss was a woman living as a man. The discovery is most devastating for their adopted son, Colman, whose bewildered fury brings the press to the doorstep and sends his grieving mother to the sanctuary of a remote Scottish village. Winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize, Trumpet by Jackie Kay is a starkly beautiful modern classic about the lengths to which people will go for love.

Wish I had known about this trans-affirming book when I was growing up! What a compelling telling of a story. I hope to read many more of Kay’s works. McCarron’s reading is of the highest quality.

Historia
The son of a Baptist pastor and deeply embedded in church life in small town Arkansas, as a young man Garrard Conley was terrified and conflicted about his sexuality. When Garrard was a 19-year-old college student, he was outed to his parents, and was forced to make a life-changing decision: either agree to attend a church-supported conversion therapy program that promised to "cure" him of homosexuality; or risk losing family, friends, and the God he had prayed to every day of his life.

A necessary resource
Revisado: 02-19-23
This memoir helps me feel less alone in my struggles as a queer person raised in a fundamentalist home. Conley accurately captures the unflagging mental torture young gay Christians like myself put themselves through and the dark associations fundamentalists connect homosexuality with. The book is such a gift to the ex-ex-gay community and Conley was so brave to have written it and faced his past. Thank you!

Historia
As a young Christian man, Matthew Vines harbored the same basic hopes of most young people: to someday share his life with someone, to build a family of his own, to give and receive love. But when he realized he was gay, those hopes were called into question. The Bible, he’d been taught, condemned gay relationships. Feeling the tension between his understanding of the Bible and the reality of his same-sex orientation, Vines devoted years of intensive research into what the Bible says about homosexuality.

Influential and full of grace
Revisado: 01-20-19
I first came across Matthew Vine’s argument in 2015 when I was in a very dark psychological place because of having repressed my sexuality for five years. His speech gave me the message of grace and affirmation that I was yearning for and his work has inspired me to finally speak against the homophobic beliefs held by people in my family. I was delighted to listen to his more detailed argument in this audiobook.
This, Vine’s first published scholarly work, is well researched and quite an impressive opus for a writer aged 24. Some of the arguments he touches on here are so deep and complex that it is unfortunate that Vines could not have spent more time delving into them, but to me this books marks the beginning of his promising authorial career and I expectantly await the publication of more book and resources penned by this inspiring scholar and activist.

Historia
Evelyn Waugh's most celebrated work is a memory drama about the intense entanglement of the narrator, Charles Ryder, with a great Anglo-Catholic family. Written during World War II, the story mourns the passing of the aristocratic world Waugh knew in his youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities; in so doing it also provides a profound study of the conflict between the demands of religion and the desires of the flesh.

A British Gatsby - a Jazz Era Lamentations
Revisado: 08-25-17
What did you love best about Brideshead Revisited?
To me, Brideshead Revisited was like a British version of The Great Gatsby. It had all of the decedent scenes and intriguing wickedness in the characters that you would want from a jazz era novel, but this one also has the charm of being English.
What did you like best about this story?
The overall tone of the story is so deliciously melancholy and refined. Would recommend to anyone who likes post-Victorian lit. I first heard about this book in a podcast about Oscar Wilde given by an Oxford professor, Dr. Sos Eltis.
Which character – as performed by Jeremy Irons – was your favorite?
I loved Jeremy Iron's voice for Sebastian. He was so petulant.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I love those serene scenes in the first book between Sebastian and Charles, especially in that first summer when they sit and get drunk on exquisite wine in the sole company of each other. The end also struck me as unexpected and well done.
Any additional comments?
Would recommend to people who like books like Wilde's 'Dorian Gray," E. M. Forrester's 'Maurice,' or Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby.'

Historia
The story of Oscar Wilde's landmark 1882 American tour explains how this quotable literary eminence became famous for being famous. On January 3, 1882, Oscar Wilde, a 27-year-old "genius" - at least by his own reckoning - arrived in New York. The Dublin-born Oxford man had made such a spectacle of himself in London with his eccentric fashion sense, acerbic wit, and extravagant passion for art and home design that Gilbert & Sullivan wrote an operetta lampooning him.

Full of amusing Wilde trivia
Revisado: 01-30-17
What made the experience of listening to Wilde in America the most enjoyable?
The style was vivid like a novel.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved getting to see how Wilde behaved in America - his reactions, his weekly routines.
Which scene was your favorite?
Wilde interacts with coal miners in Colorado. Classic Wilde.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
One of the most interesting threads throughout the story Wilde's photo-shoot in New York with Napoleon Sarony. I like the history of how those photos were misused and because of early copyright laws.
Any additional comments?
Not a fan of Friedmans' assumptions at the end of the book concerning Wilde's demise. It is one of my pet-peeves when critics try to pretend that they have a perfect understanding of Wilde's motives to take legal action against Queensburry.
It was a good read though. Loads of work went into researching

Intriguing introduction
Revisado: 12-23-16
Would you listen to A History of Britain: Volume 1 again? Why?
Yes. The information is so packed in there. I finished this a few months ago, and I am afraid I have retained probably less than a 10th of the information.
Who was your favorite character and why?
King Alfred the Great. Brilliant.
Any additional comments?
Probably written for a British audience. Had the feeling that I was pretending to know what was happening half the time because I got disoriented in time and eras.

Revisado: 12-23-16
If you could sum up Jude The Obscure in three words, what would they be?
Lovely tragic novel
What was one of the most memorable moments of Jude The Obscure?
Jude's foolish drunken scenes.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, it would have been too rich
Any additional comments?
My first Hardy novel. Brilliant. Tragic. When I finished it, I had an overwhelming feeling of having participated in something so aesthetically rich and complex. Learned a a lot about myself by exploring these characters. Would recommend.

Maurice Hall knows he must choose between living life in the shadows or denying himself a chance at love and fulfilment. Aware of his attraction to the same sex, in a time where it was considered unlawful and immoral to have homosexual desires, Maurice must decide whether to battle or submit to a prejudiced 20th-century English society.

Historia
Labeled variously a realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure and eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and a drama of heroic conflict, Moby Dick is first and foremost a great story. It has both the humor and poignancy of a simple sea ballad, as well as the depth and universality of a grand odyssey.

Excellent!
Revisado: 08-08-16
What did you love best about Moby-Dick?
Because of this brilliant recording, Moby-Dick is one of my favorite novels. Ishmael presents his whale-of-a-tale as the most epic fishing story of al time, but it is as profound as the very ocean itself.
What did you like best about this story?
I love Ishmael's narrative voice. He has the eye of a poet and presents his observations of the world in beautifully crafted passages, like tiny vivid paintings. During the mountainous hike to the story's climax, each chapter is hung with the sparkling ornaments of Ishmael's experiences. Moby-Dick was quite ahead of its time, is a highly sophisticated novel, and this is probably why it was not popular when it was first published.
What about Frank Muller’s performance did you like?
Muller's performance was marvelous. Now when I return to this recording, I can't help but smile at the sound of his voice as he assumes Ishmael's character and reads the famous opening lines. I got this recording for an Am. Lit. class, and I am still convinced that I was the only one in the class who got through the entirety of the novel and this is all thanks to Muller's brilliant recording.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, Moby-Dick cannot be consumed all at once. You need time to reflect on it. It gets quite heavy at parts, and Muller's narration helps carry you through the tougher sections.
Any additional comments?
Loved this recording. It was worth every minute. A friend recommended it to me and in turn I have lent access to it to three other friends who have all been equally captivated.
