The Earth is coming to the boiling point as the climate disaster of the meteor strike becomes more and more clear, but the political situation is already overheated. Riots and sabotage plague the space program. The IAC's goal of getting as many people as possible off Earth before it becomes uninhabitable is being threatened.

New protagonist, same great storytelling
Revisado: 04-13-24
Took a minute to get used to having Nicole as main character, but she worked out fine. Starts off with a bang, with some overdue scenes of strife on Earth as regular folks come to realize...not everyone can go to Mars or the Moon. This strife becomes the main conflict in the book. After the beginning excitement, things get kind of slow when we get to the Moon colony. Then it picks up about halfway through. Has a mystery plot and some neat sleuthing. Kowal narrates excellently as usual, and I always appreciate that not everyone in her books is 20 years old and in perfect health.

Size does matter in these delightfully tiny tales populated with narcoleptic drivers, bickering backers, suspicious spouses, and other memorable characters. Full of dark humor, intrigue, and absurdity, this collection of slightly sinister (and occasionally sweet) stories delivers a bite-size listening experience to satisfy any literary craving.

Dark and funny!
Revisado: 04-07-24
What a great surprise to find this! I was just trying out some of the search features and clicked through to this. It's what it says on the tin: slightly sinister flash fiction. I don't know what the hard copy looks like, but in my imagination it would be about the size of a picture book, with each spread one of the 55-word stories, and the illustrations are all by Edward Gorey.
As of this writing, it's in the Plus Catalog. Each story is about 30 seconds long. It's cute and smart and I hope Mourtada keeps writing.

This book is for no one
Revisado: 03-24-23
Its not for thriller readers, because there are no no twists and turns.
It's not for mystery readers, because there's no mystery. Everything is painstakingly laid out in the dullest manner imaginable.
It's not character driven, because the characters are cardboard.
It's not literary, because there are no messages or themes.
Maybe it's for people who like to read slow moving domestic abuse stories that are simultaneously predictable and unbelievable, with wooden characters who are both all-powerful and stupid beyond belief.
But that's not you, is it?

Not just for kids
Revisado: 12-20-22
Yeah these are questions from children and the author, who narrates, speaks a teeny bit "for the kids," but it's wonderful for adults too. Answered a lot of questions!

In collaboration with the Festival of Literary Diversity (FOLD), Audible is illustrating the power of the spoken word with Power in Poetry: Moods That Move. Five spoken word artists created unique pieces of poetry connected by the mood themes of the 2021 FOLD and rooted in the oral traditions of African, Indigenous, and other communities. Their poems serve as an anthem to not just the festival but to the power of diverse voices.

Spoken-word poetry, and not a dud in the bunch. Gave me lots of wholesome feels. Simply outstanding.
Very approachable. Don't be afraid of this short collection. If you've been even mildly curious about slam poetry or spoken-word poetry, this is your entry. I'll add that while I was a fan of live poetry slams, going to the Green Mill regularly, I wasn't as fond of simply going to readings. However, this recording is like going to a reading and I loved it!

Kazan delivers a brilliant performance
Revisado: 01-06-22
In fact, both actors do, but she's got the bulk of the lines and she's outstanding.
This is a story where the real story is beneath the surface, told through the dissembling and gaslighting of an unreliable narrator.
I enjoyed a short book of Gran's called "Come Closer" and this one scratched that same itch. If you liked this podcast, you will like that book as well.
This is the mildest of spoilers and has no impact on the plot, but you're warned nonetheless:
It's hilarious that Ann remembers every meal she ever ate, in detail. 😂
This is more spoilery:
I believe this helps cement that she has OCD or a form of it.

Historia
On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive, cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova - a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than 30 years.

Long yet intriguing; narrator does awful accents
Revisado: 12-03-21
This book is a RIDE. If you're looking for horror, this may not scratch that itch. It's more of a noir psychological thriller. Weber's narration is great when he's voicing the main character. It sucks when he's voicing any accent. Not only does he have no idea what what various accents sound like, he makes ESL speakers sound like total idiots. So, that kinda jars you out of the story.
However, the story is so good I stuck with it. Lots of questions about reality, magic, motives, and of course, What Really Happened. And many of those questions don't have a definite answer even at the end, but you accept that because that's also one of the themes.
I will say there are three really unbelievable info dumps given by characters we've just met, I initially felt disappointment at What Really (might have) Happened, and even after everything, remember: the leviathan's shadow misbehaved.

Revisado: 03-29-21
Kabat-Zinn's voice is perfect. Don't speed up this audio. He's talking you through an extremely relaxing (and IMO healing-promoting) body scan. Okay, there are a few other practices in this audio, but the body scan is what I bought it for. Simply amazing.
