If I could give both the book and the narration more than 5 stars I would. Wow! I don't know how this book managed to make me laugh while at the same time feeling heartbroken again and again. This is a book filled with complex, dynamic characters who were truly brought to life by Bahni Turpin. It is a tribute to all those who have and continue to be brutalized by the police, and should be read by readers young and old. I was thrilled to discover there are more books in this series, and that Turpin is a prolific narrator. I am a major fan!

This was a lovely and sexy story, from the beginning to the end about two accomplished ladies. Complete with beautiful lovemaking scenes and necessary tension and humor and realistic characters. I loved it!

This was not my favorite Seven Sisters book, although I liked the story in the past quite a lot. The characters were well-rounded and I enjoyed experiencing their journeys. The narrator was fine for the Scottish bits, but it grated on my nerves that she didn't seem to attempt to pronounce the Spanish with anything other than a British accent, even mispronouncing common names like José and Miguel. It took away from the authenticity of the story for me.

Story long but good, irritating character voices

After loving When You Least Expect It, I was excited to read another book by this author. While I liked the main characters and the premise, I think the story could have been told in half the time. I didn't need to hear the characters ruminate multiple times on the same subject. Regarding the narrator, while her general narrator voice is nice, most of her character voices are irritating and fake-sounding. I found myself turning down the volume because Reagan got on my nerves so badly, as well as Dean and even Caleb. Dean had an over-the-top NY accent, while Charlotte was described as having a Southern accent but there was no detectable one, and her baby-doll voice took away from the depth of this character for me. In some ways this book was worth reading (cute and sexy), but it was a struggle to get through some of the voices and the repetitive descriptions/dialogue.

I couldn't get past characters being described as black and brown. I didn't hear anyone being described as white.

Thandiwe Newton is a genius!

The book is beautifully epic, in which the characters grow and transform in unexpected ways, and make you fall in love with them. Tolstoy can capture the existensial dilemmas of life like almost no other, and manages to infuse humor throughout. His philosophical musings are profound and insightful, with the exception of the second epilogue in which he didn't know when to quit, in my opinion. But to me the true master here is Thandiwe Newton as the narrator. It was as if she were possessed by these characters; it felt like she found the soul of every character no matter how large or small and brought them to life not only with a distinct accent and voice but also found their emotional core. It was by far the best narration I have ever heard after listening to hundreds of books. I chose to listen to this book because of her great narration of Jane Eyre, she exceeded my already high expectations. I truly hope she narrates more books soon.
