Historia
Two young women attending college decide to have a summer adventure canoeing the rapids-strewn Thelon River that runs 450 miles through the uninhabited Barren Lands of subarctic Canada. Holly made the trip once before with a group of skilled paddlers she trained with at camp, and she wants to share that experience with her friend and lover, Lee, believing it will draw them closer. But a week in, Holly, the risk-taker, falls while taking a selfie near the edge of a cliff. She is left injured and comatose, and soon dies.

Well told tale
Revisado: 04-30-25
Well fleshed out characters, very believable. A true “story” - you wanted to know what happened next and before!
The narrator has a beautiful voice but the inflection at the end of each sentence almost made me stop listening. I couldn’t not hear it.

Feel good story
Revisado: 03-20-25
Great story! I did have a difficult time imagining someone who spoke and acted like Franklin/Henry being only 33. He had been a social worker in California, so I’d imagine a vocabulary more in tune to someone used to dealing with a more street smart, less refined demographic. I can’t imagine many of the people he worked with as a social worker wouldn’t feel intimidated by his grandiose vocabulary. Maybe if he was a 70 year old professor of literature? But nice to have a feel-good story in these times!

The war-time stories inspired me to learn more.
Revisado: 10-07-24
Loved the first third. Middle got a little long/repetitive. But maybe that is a realistic account of someone’s return from Vietnam. This book has made me intrigued to learn more from a time that I only vaguely remember as a young girl.

Great twists and turns
Revisado: 09-26-24
Typically I don’t care for books that drop one character to start a chapter with a new one, but these were such engrossing changes, I was hooked! Only thing I wasn’t a fan of is the trick where the author keeps the main players apart so that they never collaborate or learn what the other character knows so that everything keeps stalling.

Amazing characters!
Revisado: 09-16-24
Each character was fleshed out and believable. They made me laugh and cry. It’s kind of a fairytale - you are willing to believe the coincidences because they make the story such a beautiful journey. Even though it is a murder mystery, that is not how it reads. Just a good old-fashioned story.

Great Narration
Revisado: 04-11-24
This started out great but got very repetitive. I started listening at 1.2 speed. If it wasn’t for my book club this month, I would have stopped. Sooo many analogies - like a dentist pulling teeth
Like a serpent on hind legs
Like butter on a pan
Like passengers crammed in a train
Like a deer who had been hit by a car
Like a dog stacking bones
Like cattle on a train
Little warm cookies on a plate
Like a snake hugging its young
Like trees falling in a forest
Like contacts in an old man’s eyes
Like a car on blocks in the driveway
Like the end of a record
Like a child looking for a check in a Christmas card
You get the picture. These are examples from two or three of the 100+ chapters.
I couldn’t stop noticing this writing style.
I could imagine liking this as a movie, pared down.

Historia
For millennia the location of the Nile River’s headwaters was shrouded in mystery. In the 19th century, there was a frenzy of interest in ancient Egypt. At the same time, European powers sent off waves of explorations intended to map the unknown corners of the globe—and extend their colonial empires.

Laughter and Tears
Revisado: 07-21-23
Wow! So sad it had to come to an end! Love how all of the characters are interwoven. And each one of them becomes special to the reader.
Listened on my commute to work, often walked into my office wiping away tears. Such wonderfully subtle humor made me laugh too! This is one of those books that reminds you why you love to read! Perfect narration!

I’ve never read anything like this so I haven’t entirely processed yet. I love it when the author is able to put into words some of the feelings I’ve experienced but can’t name. I hope Michael is on a path to a fulfilling, happy life.
