Historia
In the country called One, dollmakers are vital members of the community. An artisan’s doll is the height of society’s accomplishments, while a guard’s doll is the only thing standing between the people of One and the Shod: vicious, cobbled monstrosities that will tear apart any structure—living or dead, inanimate or otherwise—to add to their horde. Apprentice Shean of Pearl is a brilliant dollmaker. With her clever dolls, she intends to outsmart and destroy the Shod, once and for all—a destiny she’s worked her whole life toward accomplishing.

Super Cute!
Revisado: 04-05-25
Can't wait to see what's next from this author! The world building was good and characters are well fleshed out. I wanted to punch the main character for most of the story but that was the worst part.

Historia
A revolution brewing for generations has begun in fire. It will end in blood. The Free Navy - a violent group of Belters in black-market military ships - has crippled the Earth and begun a campaign of piracy and violence among the outer planets. The colony ships heading for the thousand new worlds on the far side of the alien ring gates are easy prey, and no single navy remains strong enough to protect them. James Holden and his crew know the strengths and weaknesses of this new force better than anyone.

My most reread book in my most reread series
Revisado: 03-18-25
It would be hard to describe everything I love about this book in this small box, but I'll try. Can't say enough about how much I enjoy Jefferson Mays, his voice is lovely, and he doesn't make women sound vapid and shallow like some male readers. And the authors are at the top of their game here, asking the most important question- how do we find a way to work together, even after all the hurt we've caused each other? There are small stories of personal courage and forgiveness, there are big explosions that change everything. This book is wonderful, I hope you enjoy.

Historia
Amina al-Sirafi should be content. After a storied and scandalous career as one of the Indian Ocean’s most notorious pirates, she’s survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural.

Enjoyable read, Davabad was better
Revisado: 06-02-23
It feels as if someone told the author "Davabad was too heavy, how about you write something light and fun this time?" and this was the result. It's nice to see an older lady on an adventure. it's cool that we got some representation. But as a stand alone I thought it was a bit thin, maybe the next instalments will flesh it out a bit more.

Historia
Melanie has a destiny, though it isn’t the one everyone assumes it to be. She’s delicate; she’s fragile; she’s dying. Now, truly, is the winter of her soul. Harry doesn’t want to believe in destiny, because that means accepting the loss of the one person who gives his life meaning, who brings summer to his world.

Even more excellent than Middlegame
Revisado: 05-15-22
Seanan McGuire just keeps getting stronger as a writer, and I'm so pleased with her success. And the best part is that you really don't need to read the first one to get this one; seasons incarnated into people are much easier to grasp than math and language. Seeing the old gang was lovely without getting too cumbersome, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening.
The accents are distinct, even if I hate the way the author says the word 'again' the performance was still good. Will definitely listen again someday.

Historia
On Mars, a scientist experiments with a new engine that will one day become the drive that fuels humanity's journey into the stars. On an asteroid station, a group of prisoners are oblivious to the catastrophe that awaits them. On a future Earth beset by overpopulation, pollution, and poverty, a crime boss desperately seeks to find a way off planet. On an alien world, a human family struggles to establish a colony and make a new home. All these stories and more are featured in this unmissable collection of short fiction set in the hardscrabble world of The Expanse.

I don't even like short stories, but OMG
Revisado: 04-30-22
Drive was probably the weakest of the set, so it's good that it's out of the way quickly. I particularly enjoyed the author notes at the end of each story discussing the concepts contained within.
After each one I just wanted to sit and think about it all, which is the best review I can give.

Historia
Kidnapped at an early age, Ansset has been raised in isolation at a mystical retreat called the Songhouse. His life is filled with music, and having only songs for companions, he develops a voice that is unlike any other. But Ansset's voice is both a blessing and a curse, for it reflects all the hopes and fears of his audience, and, by magnifying their emotions, can be used either to heal or to destroy.

I'm not crying, you're crying
Revisado: 02-08-22
Sweet and deep and hard, but worth it. I personally disagree with the reviews calling this story a book about pedophilia, because I think it's a little silly to believe children don't have to navigate the desires of the adults around them. The real criticism is around how the queer community is treated. I won't spoil, just try it and see. The performance was excellent. OSC always gets the emotions right, the jealousy, the heartbreak, the inadvertent ways we hurt and help each other.

Historia
In Wisdom, Shelter. That’s the official motto of the Scholomance. I suppose you could even argue that it’s true—only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter’s scant. Our beloved school does its best to devour all its students—but now that I’ve reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it’s suddenly developed a particular craving for me. Even if I somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me, I haven’t any idea how my allies and I are going to make it through the graduation hall alive.

Historia
Nora knows she needs to move on. And forget about magic. She's back in graduate school, and her life is going surprisingly well. She doesn't need to think about other worlds, about enchantments and demons, or about magicians - even though she once aspired to become one herself. Most of all, she really should forget the magician Aruendiel, who shared the secrets of magic with her but fiercely guarded the deepest secrets of his heart. Then a chance encounter gives Nora the opportunity to slip between worlds again - and the next phase of her magical education begins.

Great world building, main character an idiot
Revisado: 03-31-21
This book is much like the first. Great premise, good pacing, believable characters, but the main girl is too stupid to live.

Historia
I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Sooooo good
Revisado: 10-08-20
2020 has been terrible but finding Naomi Novik has made a beginning in making up for it. This was possibly better than Spinning Silver, and I didn't think it was going to be possible for her to top that. I found myself starting chapters over just to extend the experience. I'm so happy, and you will be too!

Historia
Children have always disappeared under the right conditions - slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere...else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced...they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

Expensive, but worth it
Revisado: 06-23-20
This book has been in my wishlist since it came out. I've been hoping it would go down in price, but alas. Still, I feel good about spending a credit on this. It was rich and lovely, and I wish there was more. Middlegame was my first introduction to the author so I had high expectations, but even those were exceeded.
