Historia
From the United States and Britain to continental Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege, while authoritarianism is on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.

Unacceptable
Revisado: 08-13-23
The book makes me question applebauns reading of history in her other work where I’ve trusted her facts are based in facts — in this book they are not. It’s clear her agenda is to paint portraits for a western audience (that are interpretations and opinions labeled as facts yet fail to be accurate) as well as write some kind of public letter to fallen out friends. The result is a disinformation campaign that is mixing , collaging, and misinforming it is beyond unacceptable. Really sad to read this interpretive dance — destructive at best.

I do not pretend to have given an exhaustive picture of the Polish Underground, its organisation and its activities. Because of our methods, I believe that there is no one today who could give an all-embracing recital...This book is a purely personal story, my story. Jan Karski's Second World War memoir is a heroic act of witness: the courageous testimony of a man who risked everything for his country. First published in 1944, the book became an instant bestseller in the US while the war still raged in Europe.

One of THE MOST important books I have read! A historical document. A life. A document that describes what it is to be human, to face reality with clear eyes and conscious heart and carry facts.

Historia
When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, his papers were sealed in the Vatican Secret Archives, leaving unanswered questions about what he knew and did during World War II. Those questions have only grown and festered, making Pius XII one of the most controversial popes in Church history, especially now as the Vatican prepares to canonize him.

This was absolutely fantastic book. Last thoughts however were somewhat odd given the clear and detailed account

Historia
When three-month-old Lia Lee arrived at the county hospital emergency room in Merced, California, a chain of events was set in motion from which neither she nor her parents nor her doctors would ever recover. Lia's parents, Foua and Nao Kao, were part of a large Hmong community in Merced, refugees from the CIA-run "Quiet War" in Laos.

Historia
Whether you realize it or not, you are the director of your life. A person is thought of as a director if he is in charge of an opera or a movie production etc. This book points out that we are all directors of our lives. We are either struggling directors, or powerful directors, or somewhere in between.
