Historia
Invite Hannibal Lecter into the palace of your mind and be invited into his mind palace in turn. Note the similarities in yours and his, the high vaulted chambers of your dreams, the shadowed halls, the locked storerooms where you dare not go, the scrap of half-forgotten music, the muffled cries from behind a wall. In one of the most eagerly anticipated literary events of the decade, Thomas Harris takes us once again into the mind of a killer, crafting a chilling portrait of insidiously evolving evil - a tour de force of psychological suspense.

One Up on the Old Reading
Revisado: 01-06-24
After years of listening to the author-read abridged version, I was skeptical of this newer telling with a narrator with whom I was not familiar. True, the abridged leaves out so many small details and subplots that make the story flow better and give certain scenes better context, but I always envisioned Thomas Harris doing his best to convey the full story in a shorter time.
Well, I still have at least his unabridged versions of Hannibal Rising and Cari Mora.
This new telling is wonderful, the narrator enunciates well and tries his best to pronounce the foreign words and accents accurately. Those discarded subplots and details now bring a new understanding to the novel and convey the intended meaning behind the obvious impetus to pen a sequel to an amazing book.

A Solid Supernatural Thriller
Revisado: 10-26-23
As with several other reviews, I have also followed the author's advice on his YT channel. After establishing credibility with me, I purchased the book. Supernatural anything is not really my bailiwick, but I do enjoy the psychological thrillers.
While I expected a different ending, I would be extremely proud of this were my novel.
McNulty writes well, the reader will readily relate to the protagonist, and the supernatural aspect really only relates to the gun in question, sort of like many Asian type horror films where a particular object is cursed.
The narrator can be difficult to handle at first, especially if you are used to Scott Brick, Edoardo Ballerini, and the like. But his pacing and tone fits well with the story. My only criticism is that someone ought to have caught it when he pronounced Wilkes-Barre as, 'Wilkes- Bear.'

Props to the Author For the Hard Work
Revisado: 06-16-23
Comments regarding the author's narration are unfounded. While he is an Aussie, I (from the US,) had no trouble understanding because he speaks clearly and presumably writes without his native patois. My only critique with the performance is that I lost track of which character was speaking due to little differentiation in the narrator's voice.
Will listen again for better enjoyment.

Good story. Narration....meh.
Revisado: 06-06-22
I was curious to read Cornwell's first Scarpetta novel. I had read Cause of Death many years ago in an abridged version read by Blair Brown.
It's a good story, but the narrator, CJ Critt, didn't keep me engaged. I couldn't sink into the novel. Sadly, a number of other Scarpetta novels are also read by the same narrator.

Kind of a fun, Modern Whodunit
Revisado: 04-16-22
Full disclosure: This was an "included" offer with Audible membership.
The main characters were a little thin and the motives sort of trope-y; the narrator could have been more lively.
Overall, not a bad murder mystery. There were a few cringey moments where Mancuso describes the female characters, but I've read a lot worse.

Historia
Night Watch is a world as elaborate and imaginative as Tolkien or the best Asimov. Living among us are the "Others", an ancient race of humans with supernatural powers who swear allegiance to either the Dark or the Light. A thousand-year treaty has maintained the balance of power, but an ancient prophecy decrees that one supreme "Other" will rise up and tip the balance. When a young boy with extraordinary powers emerges, will the forces of the Light be able to keep the Dark from corrupting the boy and destroying the world?

Pleasantly surprised
Revisado: 03-03-22
I got this book as part of a deal or sale. I had never heard of the author. I wasn't sure what to expect. But I do enjoy books read by Paul Michael.
Definitely not let down by the author nor the narrator. The story is kind of a "Constantine" style unseen war waged between good and evil that has reached a Cold War type of stalemate. The main character is part of that force that keeps an eye on the other side. I've seen that the stories have been made into movies in Russia, if done well, they could be worth the time.

If You Like the Bosch novels...
Revisado: 02-25-22
Got this book as one of those Audible Daily Deals. Being a fan of Michael Connelly's LA cop novels, this seemed like it would be a good bet. The author writes well and the narrator is superb.
One of the most memorable parts of the novel, and demonstrates the narrator's skill, is that you are instantly annoyed by a couple of ancillary characters without the writing explicitly stating so.
Give it a shot.

Well Written and We'll Narrated
Revisado: 12-27-21
After several attempts, I have finally finished this first installment through to the end. And I'm asking, "What makes this novel so great?"
Patrick Rothfuss writes well, he doesn't veer to far from the main subject of the novel.
Nick Podehl narrates well, I didn't get fouled up between the characters and was able to follow along easily once I was through the first few chapters.
I know several people who have read this book, and the Quill Award confirms it, that say it's a great novel.
But I'm just not seeing it. What is it that is so good?
I'm genuinely curious. Perhaps I ought to continue with Book Two and see what all the fuss is?

Worth a "Re-Read"
Revisado: 11-19-21
I still have the old "abridged" versions of the Dune House prequels (CDs) that were surprisingly well narrated by Tim Curry. I put abridged in quotations because they were still relatively long stories that felt fully fleshed out.
This newer series, read by the always excellent Scott Brick, is unabridged and goes so much deeper into the small details that the original audio versions left out, I hadn't realized the depths that Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson had gone to give the readers a worthwhile experience. Definitely worth the credits to hear the unabridged versions. Though I do at times miss Tim Curry's voice acting.
