Psychologist have noticed that people often set themselves up in relationships and situations to relive past trauma to perhaps get it right this time, so I find it fitting that stories are retold. Leveret Butts has retold the Matter of England along with Indian lore, Norse mythology, I am sure other wisdom I did not recognize the source of and some of the hard won lessons of history to bring us a uniquely American tale.

Set in the late 19th century outside the West Texas town of Bretton, the second volume continues the story of four men devoted in their own ways to Sheriff Ardiss Drake. Percy Murratt awakens to find himself safely in Bretton under Drake's protection and able to learn of his absentee father. Meanwhile, Reverend Merle Tallison struggles to find God in the midst a world seemingly devoid of decency and goodwill.

I took an Arthurian literature class in graduate school and since then I have read every version of the tale I could find. This retelling as a western is the most original and enjoyable I have found found. LB has created magnificent work that should live on beside the hundes of years old source material for the next several hundred years.

I have read every version of the author tales I have been able to find from Mallory to Steinbeck. This is true to the tales while being a fresh, imaginative work from modern America. Timeless!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a simple tale but Irving’s use of language makes this short story feel like epic poetry. I only give five stars for works that I play on reading again.
