Earth is not well. The promise of starting life anew somewhere far, far away—no climate change, no war, no Twitter—beckons, and settling the stars finally seems within our grasp. Or is it? Critically acclaimed, bestselling authors Kelly and Zach Weinersmith set out to write the essential guide to a glorious future of space settlements, but after years of research, they aren’t so sure it’s a good idea.

An unexpectedly great listen!
Revisado: 11-26-24
Kelly and Zach turn out to be the good-natured and humorous adults in the room when it comes to space settlements. If I could sum up the theme in one sentence, it’s “Space is not that simple, people!” And they drive home that point again and again with self-aware humor. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! :)

Historia
At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

Great story with mind-blowing concepts

It’s easy to see why RWR is a sci-fi classic - while there are some dated references, the science and physics has easily stood the test of time. My only complaint is the narrator was somewhat robotic in his delivery.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Cements Andy Weir in Sci-Fi’s first rank
Revisado: 07-01-23
The greatest works of Science Fiction combine three elements: advances in science that are plausible enough to be possible one day in the future; the engineering, the nuts-and-bolts of making those advances happen; and - most importantly - how humanity, with all its hopes and dreams and shortcomings and flaws, can still walk the hero’s journey to eventual triumph.
This book is one such work. It is well worth your money and - infinitely more importantly - your time.

When Van gains rank as a Peacemaker, he becomes a bigger target for the criminals scattered among the stars. And he wouldn’t have it any other way. On a distant world under an alien sun, hunters and their companions—the Rovan—bond in a ritual as old as their civilization. But one of the hunters is missing, and Van, along with his growing crew, knows where to look. Climbing up into the rarified air of the super-rich, Van uncovers a new enemy: The Fade. And they are as cruel as the stars are many.

The story is great…but the quality of the performance and production make it something special. I rarely leave written reviews, but treat yourself to Impact Winter and find out why it is deserving of high praise.

Revisado: 02-08-23
As of this writing, I’m only 20 minutes into the story, yet I’ve laughed more than in the previous 50 Audible titles I bought. If the story ended right now, it’s *well* worth what I spent for it. It’s wonderful…especially if you’re a guy who’s ever had a pregnant wife. Buy this book!!!!

Anyone interested in hard SF, the nuts and bolts details of space flight and just how hard it is (including the business side of it too) - this book is for you…but just as importantly, it’s a heck of a story, too.

Good…but tarnished by author’s opinions
Revisado: 12-15-22
It really is a good book and well-written, but the author included what seems to be his own opinions concerning firearms and politics. If you’re a gun fetishist or strongly libertarian, you’ll love this book. The rest of the readers will have to ignore those parts in order to enjoy the rest.
Fortunately, the authors other book series does not suffer from these errors, which is why I was able to enjoy and finish it.
Lastly, if one just has to include cultural commentary in one’s book, at least have the good graces to include contrasting views. Cultures are rarely monochromatic .

Much too overpowered

The series started out very well, but by the end, any character that wasn’t as powerful as a demigod was essentially dog meat.
