Weakest book of the series

By far my least favorite of the Mackenzie books and the narration doesn’t change my thoughts on that. It should have had the same male narrator as the previous ones. The female narrator didn’t do a great job differentiating voices and there were many times I thought Sonny was talking, but it was actually Chance. I love the whole damsel in distress trope, but not when the male protagonist starts a fake relationship with the female in order to advance his plan. It made every interaction Chance had with Sonny seem incredibly disingenuous and widened the divide between being a true Mackenzie and an adopted one. The way the other Mackenzie boys were written, none of them would have stooped that low: lie after lie, and then using her as bait in the end. He did not redeem himself in the slightest.

I’m so disappointed that the unabridged version isn’t available considering the rest of the Mackenzie series is available that way. You lose so much of the storyline and parts are changed pretty dramatically. The original is a tried-and-true Linda Howard story, with all the alpha male romance one could want. The narrator was okay. She nailed the southern accent, but made Wolf too gruff and loud. I was worried people could hear the yelling through my earbuds.

…since I last listened to/read this book. I had a hankering to re-start the series and decided to start here. I vaguely remember the story, but didn’t realize how much filler was in the story that was, frankly, kinda boring. I’m halfway through and I’m losing interest. Maybe it doesn’t help that I can’t remember much of the storyline so I’m not sure what happens next and whether it will really be worth continuing.

While I was (pleasantly) surprised this book was the next one released on Audible, it totally exceeded my expectations! The narrator totally nailed it and was so much better than the one who did the first two in the Straight Guys series. I’m not going to complain if the books that come after these are released before her earlier works. I need me some Nate and Raffaele! Bravo!

I have been anxiously awaiting this audiobook for YEARS. I was relieved that Sean Crisden was once again narrating AND that the voices for both Ryland and Blayze had not changed. I have heard other series where the narrator’s voices change over the series and it’s totally terrible. Happy to say that I’m completely satisfied with how Ryland’s Inferno came out! The only thing I would add, though, is that the pronunciation of sodalis amans was different between the two stories. I can only hope this means that Bronx’s story will also be coming to audiobook at some point. Yay!

The storyline for Dom was better than Link’s, but still hasn’t hit as good as Mac’s did. It was also almost double the price of the other two, despite being the same length. I just can’t justify paying almost $10 or using a whole credit for a 2 hour audiobook that is just okay. I think I’ll likely continue the series on Kindle rather than Audible. I hope the writers behind Fiona put some of their older works on audiobook, too—like the Baby Series, Contract Series, and Family Affairs Series. It seems like all the new stories are just slightly changed and recycled to keep constantly putting out new works. Alexa Riley’s books ended up being the same way—what originally made them good must-read authors is gone and most of the series are now just cookie cutter stories.

Link’s story was not nearly as good as Mac’s. There was not much build up between him and Harlowe which made the instalove seem a little too instafast. So fast that you don’t really get much of a feel for either character as they are very one-dimensional. He thought she was hot, put her in his room, and then made her his old lady. The drama seemed very much an add-on to the story to give it some action, but it just didn’t hit right. Also, I second my original opinion about the female narrator’s male voice. It just sounds skeevy instead of sexy.

I haven’t read this series so I thought I would pick it up on Audible since the price was decent. Loved the story of Mac and Bridget—and it had everything I’ve come to expect from Fiona Davenport. Only thing I will complain about is that the female narrator’s male voice sounds like an old decrepit man who has been chewing tobacco for most of his life and spits a lot when he speaks. Kind of…not hot. It makes it seem that there’s more of a 40 year age gap between the couple and not less than 20 years. I would be happier if the male narrator just narrated the whole story instead of doing a dual narration.

Considering the main character is supposed to be Nora Kelly, they missed the mark. Most of the story was about Corie Swanson with Nora’s portion of the story being propped up by her idiot brother. It seems like he gets worse in every book and Nora enables him. It was also the reason I skipped the trial chapters. Skip was an impulsive idiot (the worst by far) and there’s little I hate more in the world than crooked cops. I could have done without that portion of the story because it was a dead storyline and was obviously contrived so that Nora could be in her own book. There are many other things that could have been done in Skip’s case other than trusting a lawyer. Press conference with the tribe detailing the situation? If the Sheriff was worried about being re-elected, a press conference could have caused quite a stir. Nora calling her billionaire boyfriend for help with greasing palms and lining pockets? Or even finding someone who could hack into Skip’s phone to retrieve the deleted video? Heck, at the very least, she could hire hackers to dig up all the dirt on the old Sheriff. The holes in all this made the storyline frustrating. And the hiker incident was pretty boring. The book dragged on and I agree with other reviewers that it seemed like lazy writing and like D&P didn’t even write it themselves. I’ve always been a fan (I first read Relic when I was in 6th grade), but I tend to not continue with series that are about the same main characters for a reason. This book is that reason….eventually they run out of gumption and a storyline dies. Not every book can be a winner and I haven’t been totally impressed with the last two Nora books. At least the last one was exciting.

I’m guessing Ms. Farrell has a contract to do the entire series, which is why there hasn’t been a change in narration. She absolutely has slaughtered Pendergast in every single book she has done. The first one sounded like he was British. I had no clue that the line between British and Southerner was so small *eye roll.* I like this story the least out of all of them, probably because the whole “government keeping alien secrets from everyone” is not really a storyline anymore, but the truth. Although, it does shine a truth on how much is done to keep the government’s secrets a secret. And, like the story, lives are snuffed out without prejudice to keep it that way. Perhaps that’s why I had such an issue with this book…too much truth to it all to enjoy what the authors were selling. Likely will not be a re-listen for me.
