It's not the kind of story one will want to read or listen to among many distractions. The story flows at a Real Life pace. Every time I start it I make sure that the television, phone, and doorbell are all turned Off!

Fun to experience

One of the most fun stories to experience! I read it first in the 1970's, and it became a friend I visited regularly.

Trust No One

The story is totally devastating. All she has to do to be murdered by torture is be female, and trust the wrong person. As the two three-3-year-old girls mentioned did.

Absolutely Delightful!

Absolutely delightful! Making the gruesome history of medical practice - I will not call it care - into an interesting and often comical story has made absorbing the frightening details of the past into an interesting and frequently entertaining experience.

What did you love best about Katherine?

The characters of Katherine and John become fully-developed characters as the story progresses. The lives of all the characters are described in such clarity that I am always projected as a companion and empathetic friend to Katherine throughout the entire story. I share her emotions from excitement at leaving the protected environment of Sheppy and anticipating the imagined marriage through the contact of one handsome and very charming young man through the powerlessness of "being advantageously married off" to the one man she disliked by her sister and the Queen despite her protests. I feel her resignation and determination to do her societal duty during her marriage to this man. And I feel her blossom in the love of the one man she truly loves. Then the triple horror of the physical destruction of her home, the revelation of the true cause o thef death of her husband, and the loss of her daughter, which might have thoroughly broken anybody no matter who they were. But Katherine makes big decisions, follows through on them, and accepts major changes and responsibilities for which we imagine she has no preparation at all. She does well with them from raising her children as a single mother in a society that does not accept such a thing in their midst to being mildly prosperous about overseeing her lands, livestock, and tennants. Her historically radical choice to free her serfs set an example for the entire country of England. That in the end she won back the love of her greatest love seems anticlimaxical. However, it does set the stage for her descendants' role in her future history as leaders of her country.

What about Wanda McCaddon’s performance did you like?

I like Wanda McCaddon's performance in the way that she could also fluently read the French passages (which I am not good at), and add what sounds like could be authentic music to the lyrics of folksongs from antiquity.

If you could take any character from Katherine out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would take Katherine. I would like to hear her tell her story from her own experience. The fourteenth century was a time in which women were little more than property for men to use, abuse, and discard pretty-much as they pleased yet Katherine became a property owner and ran her estate better than the men in her life had been able to do. She made her way into the hearts of her neighbors despite her notoriety. She raised her children to be honorable members of their society. I admire her ability to live above and beyond what the reputation the Benedictine monks saw fit to heap upon her head.

Any additional comments?

I have loved, and re-read on a regular basis, this story of Katherine in print format ever since I was introduced to it more than forty years ago. It is a story that, as a beautifully written symphony, leads the reader through the rainbow of life experiences and emotions. Only a true "reader" will understand how a well-written story can become a friend that one must visit from time to time, not just read it because it "made the best-seller list" and then move on.

If you could sum up Without Remorse in three words, what would they be?

Rescue, Protect, Love

What did you like best about this story?

His isolation pierced by an act of kindness, he takes care of her, then cares for her, then falls in love. When she is killed, his revenge is not really revenge, and is so subtle even the police are hard-pressed to figure out what is really going on: he is cleaning up the streets using the only way he knows to solve a problem.

What about Michael Prichard’s performance did you like?

Prichard's voice is evocative, and brings the characters to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The day the doctor demanded that Kelly be treated for his STD without the nurses telling him that he has it.

Any additional comments?

Without Remorse illustrates that prostitution is not a "victimless crime." It is a wake-up call to our society on the workings of the dark world of drugs and prostitution. Tom Clancy brilliantly wrote a story that will touch, break, then heal your heart.
