What an entirely perfect little gem of a story this is. Incredibly simple. Incredibly well told haunting, in a way that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

After having read this book twice, I decided to listen to the audio performance, because sometimes I read too fast and with too much greed. I wanted to see if I had missed something, I found whether read or told this story holds up.

The narrator is very good, I somehow found myself, wishing for slightly less polish, but by the end, both story and storyteller has swept me away once again.

If you are looking for a brief synopsis of the battle of Saratoga, why it was fought, and what it meant, this will get the job done. I found the narrator to be very stilted, over pronouncing his words and plodding in his style.

Well written, and well read, this book serves as an excellent introduction to the subject of Japanese history and culture. I recommend it if you are in a hurry to get some knowledge under your belt, and then begin to dig deeper.

I downloaded this audiobook because I was doing some research...I am probably so far outside of this book’s audience demographic that I might as well be on another planet. And yet the story, particularly as performed by Tara Sands, took me into itself...
It is amazing how an author call summon real people with distinct personalities into existence, they become, if you are lucky, your friends... but when the book is finished they fade away again, and you are left to mourn their departure. I found it very painful to watch Chloe and Val fade back into fiction’s ether, and a full day after finishing the book I still miss them.

Other reviewers here have pointed out that this book is not a manifesto, it is not an unequivocal call for gay rights, or an exit from the closet [There are also some plot points from 1979 that boggle a mind reading the book some forty years later] - it is a story of confusion, blurred lines, and uncertainty.

But it is real, and it is woven of the same passion from which young friendships and young love are woven. The boundaries between the two can become unclear, as they do here. And the memories are sweet and painful and joyful and melancholy all at once...and although it hurts, you wouldn’t trade it for the world.

This is not a gay story, a straight story, or even bi story... it’s a love story. Thank you for this little gem.

My wife was assigned this book as part of a team she is on, and so we decided to listen together. There’s nothing In this book that does not ring true, but neither is there anything in it that is revolutionary, or that hasn’t been said more eloquently somewhere else. See other people as people, not objects, follow your natural instincts to serve others, and concentrate on your own behavior in this regard and don’t focus on the flaws of others. If you attended a halfway decent Sunday school (or your cultural equivalent), you’re already on your way to having mastered most of the principles in this book.
