Historia
Douglas Murray, #1 international bestselling author and renowned cultural commentator, confronts arguably the most pressing question of our time: Why are Western supporters of Palestine unwittingly aligning with an evil empire? The campus left frames the violent hostilities as white colonialists committing genocide. Yet only a third of Israelis are Ashkenazi Jews of European ancestry. Murray argues that the conflict is not a simple tale of oppressor versus oppressed, but a clash between a thriving multi-racial democracy and a death cult bent on its destruction.

Erudite and Moving
Revisado: 04-26-25
Nothing to dislike. Probably the clearest exegesis contrasting those with a true moral center and those who suffer an irrational psychopathic obsession with death as a means to achieve irrational political goals. More simply - good vs evil.

Elegiac writing

Very few writers (Mark Helprin is one) can create a mood that infuses characters with such a simple, graceful style. The narrator adeptly captured the beauty of the prose rather well

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Outstanding narration.
Revisado: 06-29-22
The reader superbly brings individuality to each character and maintains a level of drama (even the long passages on the anatomy and physiology of whales) throughout that makes a notoriously difficult book to read both engaging and accessible.

Historia
First published in 1958, a year after On the Road put the Beat Generation on the map, The Dharma Bums stands as one of Jack Kerouac's most powerful and influential novels. The story focuses on two ebullient young Americans - mountaineer, poet, and Zen Buddhist Japhy Ryder, and Ray Smith, a zestful, innocent writer - whose quest for Truth leads them on a heroic odyssey, from marathon parties and poetry jam sessions in San Francisco's Bohemia to solitude and mountain climbing in the High Sierras.

Really Beat, man
Revisado: 06-17-20
I read this book more than 50 years ago The narrator made this audio book. I have found that a good actor narrating adds immediacy and drama to a good story.
I was deeply steeped in Zen Buddhism, Kerouac, and Gary Snyder going to school in Berkeley in the 60’s and spent a lot of time hiking around the same places in Marin, etc so this was a trip down memory lane. I do not think that is necessary to appreciate Kerouac, though. If you are open minded and/or curious about the Beat culture and stream of consciousness literary style, it is well worth a listen.

Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Great writing.

Discovered Longmire from excellent TV series but as good as it is, the evocative writing brings so much more that the limitations of a screen play does not allow.
Great performance by one of Audible’s premier narrators.
