Historia
In Design Any Disaster, certified emergency manager and master business continuity practitioner Patrick Hardy reveals the secrets of disaster preparedness that helped him build the largest and most successful small business and family disaster planning company in the world. He explains why: You should never, ever "remain calm" during a disaster, 99% of all disaster plans are a complete waste of time, and fancy disaster equipment and supplies actually leave you less prepared.

Impossible to listen to
Revisado: 11-05-23
While the author’s knowledge is probably there, it’s a pity he doesn’t share it. Every chapter contains 1!!! Thought only that is repeated, repeated, repeated and repeated again in every 3rd sentence, like you are in a nightmare loop. I couldn’t listen even half way through. I was expecting a direct and coherent guidance, with practical examples. What we get here, is a set of ‘life’ stories and ‘I’ll teach you the real stuff’. The actual practical part of the book can be squeezed into half an hour. Either the author badly needed a ‘real’ book to be published, or the publishing company thinks that this way of material delivery sells better, is lost on me.

Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of carrying only opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends - why the world's population is increasing; how many young women go to school; how many of us live in poverty - we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers.

To fall in love with research
Revisado: 07-18-21
All the way through the book the Hans appeals to the reader’s emotions. It’s not a book about facts, but how we feel about facts, how facts make us feel and possible emotional and factual consequences of not paying attention and not making an effort to understand to accurate data. Quote: “numbers are very useful to understand the world, but the world cannot be understood through numbers ALONE”.
It’s also very emotional in the sense of him always giving example of how he felt in different situations: shock, horror, making mistakes that led to human deaths, happiness, satisfaction, pride - endless range of impact of decision making.
It logically falls in the same line of books that talk about how our mind works: ‘thinking, fast and slow’, a bit of ‘21 lesson for 21 century’ - but using very recent data and a lifetime of longditudinal research.

For well over 2,000 years, much of our fundamental "desire to know" has focused on science. Our commitment to science and technology has been so profound that these stand as probably the most powerful influences on human culture. To truly understand our Western heritage, our contemporary society, and ourselves as individuals, we need to know what science is and how it developed. In this 36-lecture series, one of science's most acclaimed teachers takes you through science's complex evolution of thought and discovery.

Historia
Today, most Westerners still see the war in Afghanistan as a contest between democracy and Islamist fanaticism. That war is real, but it sits atop an older struggle between Kabul and the countryside, between order and chaos, between a modernist impulse to join the world and the pull of an older Afghanistan - a tribal universe of village republics permeated by Islam. Now, Tamim Ansary draws on his Afghan background, Muslim roots, and Western and Afghan sources to explain history from the inside out and to illuminate the long, internal struggle that the outside world has never fully understood.

Historia
It isn’t easy being Sunday’s child, not when you’re the rather overlooked and unhappy youngest sibling to sisters named for the other six days of the week. Sunday’s only comfort is writing stories, although what she writes has a terrible tendency to come true. When Sunday meets an enchanted frog who asks about her stories, the two become friends. Soon that friendship deepens into something magical. One night, Sunday kisses her frog goodbye and leaves, not realizing that her love has transformed him....
