I couldn't follow

Halfway through I realized I had no idea what was going on. I love Lindsey Davis, but I listen to books while multitasking & just couldn't follow the narration. I'll probably start over with a paper version.

In dire need of an editor

I’m a Quentin Tarantino fan. I love his movies. I even enjoy the jokes and references that I don’t catch until I read about them somewhere else. I looked forward to his novelization of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. I decided to listen to the Audible version.

The audible book is narrated by Jennifer Jason Leigh. She does a decent job. I hear her put gravel in her voice, and I see DiCaprio. Brad Pitt is not so clear.

What is extremely clear, throughout the narration, is Quentin Tarantino. Moreover, it’s Quentin Tarantino showing off. He’s saying “I can write this story, I can write a western, I can write a war story.” “I can relate the history of Hollywood, movies and television, in excruciating detail. I can tell you the names of all the lead actors and actresses, and their TV role guests. I can even tell you who played bit parts.

What really sets this book apart, as a document in serious need of an editor, are the side excursion. There is, for instance, an excursion into the alcoholic downfall of Aldo Ray. That includes the actions taken to keep him away from alcohol, which movies were affected by his drinking, his best actor award for porn, what other actors did porn, and more. Aldo Ray has nothing to do with the story at the center of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Entertaining

Certainly not a "cozy" mystery. The story deals with death and dismemberment, racism, bigotry, sexism, and nepotism. It does so with compassion, a serious mind, and a lot of sarcasm. The very three-dimensional heroine is in the late stages of pregnancy, and the problems associated with getting her four existing children to where they need to be is treated as a complex problem second only to the murders to be solved. I look forward to other books by Mr. Nicieza.

I had given up on fantasies.

Years ago I swore off teen age coming of age books. more recently I swore off books about super heroes. And yet... I'd liked something else by Drew Hayes. this is a long book so inexpensive in terms of minutes per dollar. So what the heck. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I bought totally into the concept, thought it had the right mix of humor and drama. on to year two.

pleasant listen... a twist on fantasy games. fun without being cornball. The "hero" gathers tools, maintains an inventory, and moves through the mission by moving to higher levels.

My Audible library has over 200 titles. This is clearly the most engaging. I usually listen to Audible while driving, walking, doing chores,etc. Much of The Martian I listened to while just sitting and listening. A great book and Wheaton did a great job.

This series of short lectures makes quantum theory, relativity, etc. interesting and fun. it also reminds me weekly I enjoy sci fi.

I don't like to be negative, but...

I, for one, have become used to Audiobooks that are more performance than narration. That is not the case here. I couldn't think of a way to describe the narration until a long section of the Bible was quoted. The whole book was read like Father Smith used to read the gospel when I was growing up. it was just ...read. In fact, read quickly. At one point I stopped to check the speed.
